Welcome to the Design for a Cause Challengers Page!

Our 'Design for a Cause Challenge' a(n) collaboration/association with Arduino, has now launched. The 16 Challengers will use the the Arduino MKR1000 Dev BoardMKR1000 Dev Board to create a piece of assistive technology for individuals living with physical or mental impairments. These Challengers will receive a Challenger Kit for FREE.

Project: Artificial Leg Support with Stair Climbing Ability

Synopsis: The design of an artificial leg support implemented with Arduino MKR1000 DevBoard with stair climbing ability. The prime motive of making this leg is to make an affordable stair climbing leg support which can be integrated with non- electric or normal wheelchair to lift 120kg/264.5 pounds. Both legs are connected to an Arduino Advanced Controller.

Project: Ultrasonic Collision Avoidance System

Synopsis: When I heard about this challenge, I knew right away I wanted to do something to help the blind. Canes are great and effective tools. Unfortunately, they are also bulky and not practical for tight spaces. Speaking with a local blind teacher, we decided on creating something that she can wear and detect obstacles while giving haptic feedback for both the classroom and everyday life.

Project: Caretaker Summoner for Mentally Handicapped Adult

Synopsis: For this challenge, I would like to design a device which can assist mentally handicapped adults with summoning help. The device will have a very limited number of large pushbutton switches with photographs of their caretaker(s) on the button. When the user presses that particular button, the device will contact the caretaker (either by email, text or recorded telephone call.)

Project: Smart Cane

Synopsis: A "Smart Stick" for the blind that is powered by Arduino. Our proposed project uses an ultrasonic sensor to detect obstacles in close proximity to the user. The information from the sensor is processed by the Arduino MKR1000 board to send a noise or vibration to alert the user. Additionally, there are sensors for the presence of light and water respectively that alert the user with the corresponding noise emanated from the Buzzer. The light sensor can be helpful for the user to traverse dark or dimly lit places. In case the Stick is misplaced, the user can locate it by means of a remote which tracks the location of it.

Project: The Seeing EyeDuino

Synopsis: The Seeing EyeDuino will be a robotic Seeing Eye dog that guide the seeing impaired around obstacles and danger. The user will be able to control the speed through the hand harness attached to the robot. When there is danger the robot will emit a specific sound correlated with that danger to alert the user. There will be different sound emitted for different dangers. I will also try to create a touch pad that will send this information in braille as well.

Synopsis: This project is to enhance the lives of people suffering from Anosmia, an inability to sense smell. The project will be split into two main subsystems: Audio & Visual Cue System and a Smart Wheel Chair. It translate the smells in the environment and have voice control features over appliances—alerting potentially harmful gas leaks.

Project: Blowing-Whistle as Controller(BWaC)

Synopsis: The Blowing-Whistle as Controller (BWaC) can control home appliance remotely. It is helpful to elders with slow coordination and difficult precise touch controller like an IR-remote or mobile. The one fix-frequency whistle can send on-off signals to lock doors, turn off LED lamps, and close curtains. It can also detect keys left at the door. When you blow the whistle in front of your door, the servo will turn the lock.

Project: The Familiar Appointment and Medication Reminder (FAMiliaR)

Synopsis: People with memory or cognitive issues need a reminder system to help them take medication, attend or prepare for appointments, or any other one-off or recurring events. This unit is connected to a medication organizer box with a familiar voice informing users on types of medication and how to take them. In enhanced models sensors could monitor opened medication compartments and provide visuals or videos of family for memory stimulation.

Project: Medicine Clock

Synopsis: This is a reminder system for people who have trouble remembering to take their medicine. This system produces an ecosystem of sensory triggers built by the patient and their family. It pairs sensory "tokens" to cue memories by playing music or redirecting residents to focus upon environmental items which provide positive feedback.

Project: The Balance Belt

Synopsis: A wearable device for seniors that senses falling motion and bad posture. Following the detection of a fall, the device will send a notification to the user's phone and a motor vibration in the device. If the user does not respond with a confirmation within a given time limit, the device would call 911 using a recorded message with the user's name, address and medical history then it would request an ambulance. We would like to implement things like posture reminders, and other functions to ensure a better quality of life.

Project: Fingerprint Skeleton Key

Synopsis: My idea is primarily aimed towards the visually impaired people, but I feel it can be useful for anyone. We live in an age of an ever growing market of smart locks and NFC locks, again there are a lot of plain locks which remain all over. While for a non visually impaired person it's annoying to go through a key ring looking for the right one, it is even more cumbersome for a visually impaired person. Another problem is finding where people left their keys. This product should resolve these issues.

Project: AUDIO4VISION - Automated Image Caption Audio Generator for Visually Impaired People

Synopsis: Living with visual impairment can be challenging, since daily-life situations are difficult to understand without good visual acuity. This is a wearable device, a headset with a camera(arduCam) on the front, which will take a continuous stream of images. These images will then be passed through a neural network model and give a description announcing to the visually impaired user.

Synopsis: This project aims to solve challenges faced by the people who are unable to speak. The wearable sensor based gloves acquire information related to the shape, orientation, movement, and location of the hand. They contain flex sensors and a 3-D accelerometer. Based on particular movement, voice correspondence will be generated and the text will be displayed. A mode change on the system can also control home appliances connected to the system.

Project: Autism Assistant

Synopsis: My autistic son does not speak so I will create a system that will speak on his behalf with the push of buttons. I will also implement a touch screen where he can select items with the button and say “I want” then display item that he selects. It will say out loud “I want” “Apple” or “Chips” or whatever he selects. My goal is to develop a device with a flash drive that parents can add photos and audio (their voice) for each item to meet the child's needs.

Design For a Cause : Winners Announcement

After 11+ weeks of designing, researching, prototyping, coding and testing, our Design for a Cause Challenge has come to a close. Have our challengers improved the lives of individuals living with physical or mental impairments?

Project Summary

Milos created a device that helps users with sight issues or low dexterity to open locked doors. The prototype scans RFID tags next to or on locks. Then it presents the user with the right key using added fingerprint recognition technology.

Assistive Technology with the Arduino MKR1000 Dev Board

Integrate the low-cost Arduino MKR1000 IoT Dev BoardMKR1000 IoT Dev Board into your project for the chance to win a prize package worth up to $2430 USD.

What are Design Challenges?

Design Challenges are 11-week-long build challenges where applicants submit a project idea to a panel of judges. After the 11 weeks are over, the judges choose which projects and blogs deserve the prizes and glory that come with being a Design Challenge winner. Every challenge has a theme and a kit partner.

Design for a Cause Challenge

To judge the merits of the Design for a Cause Challenge applications and final project builds, element14 asked the help of a panel of experts to provide their knowledge.

So, without further ado, element14 is pleased to introduce our panel of judges:

Arduino - Arduino Judges

As always, a specialist judge from Arduino will be giving their expert feedback and advice.

Arduino are providing a small team of senior judges with years of combined experience building and expanding the Arduino family.

In addition to the top level technical judges Arduino will also be providing a judge who is knowledgeable in the world of disabilities and mechanical aids to those with them.

element14 Team - Community Judges

Senior members of the element14 Community Team will provide their support and input on this Design Challenge.

They will be tasked with checking in on challengers, helping to connect engineers with solutions, and making sure everyone adheres to the rules!

Their combined experience in engineering, design challenges, and the Maker scene will be tested as they help lead the team of judges and challengers to the finish line.

Thank you to our Judges for offering their time and service, as well as being on hand to respond to questions during the Challenge. The element14 Community Team with help oversee the judges and challengers during the design challenge process.

These guide character bios have been created to help challengers come up with application ideas, these bios have been created with individuals in mind but their identities changed to preserve privacy.

Challengers can take inspiration from these characters or others in their own lives if they wish.

We ask you to consider how best to improve the lives people living with limitations using the Arduino MKR1000 and set their projects free for the world to recreate.

Meet Sarah

Meet Sarah, Sarah is a 32 year old woman from Scotland, she enjoys watching her local football team on a weekend at the stadium or on the TV, she likes to paint and she likes taking her Pug, Charlie, out for walkies on an evening after work. Over the last two years Sarah has been struck by early onset Arthritis in all her main joints. The painful joints and reduced dexterity have made it hard for her to walk more than a few steps and so she has become a wheelchair user. Her reduced or painful dexterity causes issues with everything from turning on the TV to being able to hold a knife and fork. Sarah is working hard to make sure it does not impact her regular activities but sometimes could do with technology to give her a helping hand, even if she is “Not a Technology Person”.

Meet Mike

Meet Mike,Mike is a 65 year old retired lawyer from Iowa, USA. He enjoys going to the Opera, fine dining, writing short stories, listening to the TV and radio. Turning on the TV set and finding his favorite stations is the extent of Mike’s technical skills. Mike was born legally blind and can only see light levels, no shapes or colours. Mike lives with his wife Claire, she has been his carer, secretary and partner for the past 35 years but over the past few years her health has been failing her and Mike worries about his independence if she is sick or passes away. Mike often needs Claire to charge his accessible cell phone and trouble shoot any issues with his text to voice program on his ageing PC.

Meet Mixy

Meet Mixy, real name Michelle, is your average 17 year old stroppy teenage geek from Germany, Mixy likes going to rock concerts, playing games on her PC, experiments with Arduino, she love hanging around malls and cheap black nail varnish. She is never seen without a cell phone glued to her hand. Mixy currently lives with her parents, attends a mainstream public school and is starting to consider college options or a year abroad to “find herself”. Her father, Walter, hearing this always points at her and says “there you are, found you”. At age 14 she had a stroke that caused her to lose control of the left hand side of her body, including, sight in her left eye, hearing in her left ear and most control of her left arm and leg. This leaves her left limbs in need of rehabilitation exercises to retain the minimal strength they currently have. Like any stubborn teenager in this situation, Mixy is not going to let her limitations define her. She has been learning Arduino and basic programming to help automate things for her in the future.

Design for a Cause – Design Challenge
The Assistive Technology Challenge

To celebrate the launch of The element14 Community “Design for a Cause” campaign and Arduino Day, we are pleased to introduce the ‘Design for a Cause’ Design Challenge with The Arduino MRK1000.

In this new Design Challenge, Challengers are invited to use the Arduino MKR1000 to create a piece of assistive technology for individuals living with physical or mental impairments.

We have created guide character bios with real individuals in mind but their identities changed to preserve privacy.

Challengers can take inspiration from these characters or others in their own lives if they wish.

Challengers are to consider how best to improve the lives people living with limitations using the Arduino MKR1000.

As part of this Design Challenge, Challengers are invited to make their code and methods Open Source so others around them can build

Example applications could include:

OpenSource Electric Wheelchair Conversion kit
Smart Prosthetics
Sense Replacement System
Safer cooking options for people with sight impairments
Mobility Aids
Dexterity Aids
Help with household appliances
Proximity Detecting Canes
Communication devices

15 Challengers will get the following kit free of charge.
