There are different opinions on the internet on what is the right product to lubricate these things.

You would be right there ... and some aren't even based in fact.

When we were overhauling printers, we used a graphite based grease.

These were highly mechanical Point Of Sale receipt printers and had a mixture of metal and plastic parts.

They were stripped, cleaned (using isopropyl alcohol), and greased during assembly.

Interestingly at work we've suffered premature bearing failure in small bearings.

It turns out the newer synthetic oils have a shelf life, and they start separating.

Their in service life is years, but their shelf life is much less, which has caused issues with spares.

So it is important to ensure you use the correct lubricant.
