You also cleared up the thought that supply and three wires should be all thats needed from the arduino.

Great post Andy,

I have a project where I need to control multiple LED's with repeatable power levels and brightness values.

I will take a look at the Infineon board, it looks like it would do the LED control to the level I need.

I've added a couple of standoffs with Sugru to the backboard (someone on pointed out on twitter that there are cheaper alternatives). And soldered the LED to a bit of my favourite tripad board along with a header. I'll hopefully have some time to make up cables during the week. The power board was added using some self tapping screws and small sections of plastic pipe (from an empty soap dispenser) for spacers.

The shield has a controller of its own which keeps running even when the arduino is switched off or even disconnected! You might be interested in adding a DMX chip if you want to remove the arduino.

I used the Infineon shield and currently it just has three wires (SCL, SDA, GND) on a connector hanging in place. I hope to control the LEDs with an RPi someday but cannot figure out a good application for it right now. Same goes for the Motor Shield. I am trying to get my hands on a bigger BLDC to experiment with.
