Fellow contenders, how far did you get with the Atmel SMART SAMA5D4 Xplained Ultra board?

What are you going to do with this kit in your project?

Have you been able to use it for your Enchanted Object?

I have spent many many hours on that board.

In the end I could build and cross-build bare metal and linux programs in C++ on it.

But given that I already had those skills before I started with the SAMA5D4, it should have taken me maximum a week, not the 3 months that I invested in it.

I still think it is a great board. The doco wasn't good enough when we started, but improved very well. But the support community isn't one I'd like to use any more in my future life. I'm not sure if Atmel realises what impact some of the participants have on your enthusiasm to give the board a go.

At least he's going to give it a try rather than it sitting in my drawer. He already knew about the Yocto project so I guess he knows more than I do.

Hi clem57,

I've never tried to use DT overlays. We were planning to do so with our 3.18-based kernel but maybe some patches are still missing in this one: the sysfs interface which might be handy...

I'm looking forward following your progress on this topic as I have big expectations concerning the use of overlays to simplify the "mutiple cpu modules/mother boards/screens" situation...

This seems to imply that any linux kernel 3.17 with patches should be able to overlay the device tree. But the tools are not in normal SAMA5D4 Yocto. But I have Ubuntu and may try later.

The dtb files are part of the linux4sam demo packages, the dts and dtsi files unfortunately not. But they can be found on github.

Hi,

If you only have the .dtb at hand, you can use the Device Tree Compiler to read it:

dtc -I dtb -O dts my_dtb_file.dtb

But I advice you to read the .dtsi/.dts files that generated the .dtb that you have: it's far more readable!

The actually loaded DTB can be obtained on the U-Boot command line. You have to load the kernel and dtb through the band load commands in the bootcmd variable and the interpret the dtb with FTD print. I can give you more precise information when I am back home.

I am pretty sure I tested devices connected to the I2C bus on the SAMA5D4 without an issue and based on a standard build (Not a custom one) and examples are given right here SAMA5D4 Xplained Ultra - Tips and Tricks #2 - Using the built in IO and external devices

the buss that is set up is '0" and so for example to scan the i2C bus you would issue the command as follows "i2cdetect -y 0"

Check the DTB file also known as the device tree binary. If it does not have I2C-1 that would be the problem...

I am trying to use the RGB shield on the Xplained board. I2C is connected to I2C-1 which is not in the /dev path. Any Ideas?

I search the net for an answer and will report if I found a solution...

I have not done much. I tried to mount the root file system through NFS which did not work. Either the kernel has no NFS or network drivers compiled in. I did not debug that. NFS works when booted with the rootfs on the flash. Next step will be installing node.js / io.js. I reduced my requirements to node.js + linux + I2C drivers. This should be possible.

It's still in the box, it's a bit big for my project.

I'm making slow progress getting the toolchain working on the Yun, simply in order to get python requests[security] installed I've needed gcc, as, make, perl, bintools and ldconfig. Progress described below.
