and about chemical smell - I have observed this also,it seems that after heating to the high temperature ( ~ 80 deg. C in my case), there is a strong smell of resin from the laminate I used (cheap, paper based one). Maybe in your case some material was damaged by the temperature, giving off not only chemical smell but maybe also some kind of solvent that have damaged stickers?

It's surprising to see life under the lid...I like the comparison of the conditios out and inside the case.
