&lt;p&gt;Yes. The gap for a flyback is the&amp;nbsp;E-leg in the middle. Standard, both sides usually touch when you buy the halves. The discoloration is probably caused by a grinding process during production. &lt;p&gt;I salvaged a transformer from a power supply, and asking around about how to take it apart, someone suggested to boil it in water for 10+ minutes.
