I could run the boosterpack example out of the box on a LaunchPad C2000. For the Hercules LaunchPad I had to create a bitbang i2c library first.

I used the High-end timer for that. That takes care that the i2c runs on that peripheral. It doesn't use processor time.

There is a slightly more efficient power safe hack on the internet.

Remove the two pull-up resistors, and replace your two jumpers with 22K pull-down resistors.

I am also planning for something similar...
