Good summary.

Your supply woes reminded me of one of my early project where we had ordered a certain type of motor with a 30-day delivery.

It turned out that a freak Hurricane had dumped 15-inches of rain and flooded the foundry in Pennsylvainia. So the 30-day delivery turned into a 9 month delay.

Joy of joys. We did finally get the motor and installed the system, though we were a bit late, the customer understood.

I learnt a great lesson from one of the older techs at work.

He was fixing switchmode supplies, which tend to go bang with lots of smoke and smells, along with many other dead or damaged parts.

To overcome this he used a lamp in series with the mains voltage.

50, 100 or even a 150w, and if it went well then the lamp was never noticed.

You can use this method if you have a supply with no current limiting.

Use an appropriate wattage lamp of the same or higher voltage, and instead of smoke and smells, you might just get a light lamping up.

However there is nothing like having a current controlled supply, preferably with a meter to show when its not right.
