I am looking forward to following your project.

Years ago, one of the first test instruments that I made was a lightening intensity meter. I took an old AM radio tuned off station and rectified the audio output that would normally go to the speaker. I then integrated the output with a small electrolytic cap and used the output to drive an mA meter. Every time there was a lightening discharge in the area the needle of the meter would jump. As the storm intensified or got closer the needle would rise higher and higher. As the storm diminished or moved away the needle would settle back to the zero point.

I came across this lightning detector. It looks like it might be useful - it claims a 40 km range:
