For this application it will be really a challenge to write down robust algorithm, which will differentiate between detecting a real pothole and other motion which may occur during the usual driving (false positive and also false negative cases). How do you plan to proceed ?

Using a button is not so smart in my opinion. It would be nice to see an automatic system. Nevertheless I think you could use the button press while you will collect your test data -> each pothole marked with a button press (time stamp).

This looks like a very interesting project.

The idea is to detect potholes through the accelerometer and mark that geo-location on Google Maps so that tracking them is easy.

is there a specific google API you plan to use to mark the location ?

I am curious as to why you wait for the accelerometer to detect the pothole?

Why not just click a button when you visually spot one and avoid putting yourself and your bike through the unpleasant bump?
