IoT on Wheels: Real World Applications

So as I return to campus after being away all summer, I am greeted with an implementation of this very Design Challenge all around me. Our campus has introduced a bike sharing app/company called LimeBike. This company provides bikes and places them all around campus and the surrounding area that will allow students to use them as the please. It is a simple concept you find yourself a LimeBike bike (easily spotted due to its lime green and yellow color scheme and the app which shows you all nearby bikes), scan the QR code or enter the code into the app to unlock the bike, ride off into the sunset only to lock the bike with a push of a button. Below I will add some pictures of the bike and app, as well as link to LimeBike's web page. I just found it very exciting to see unique implementations of questions and challenges like this thriving in the wild!

I've seen that the submission period has been extended but when the sponsored challengers will be announced ? There is a dead line for this ?

Applications closed on the 21st. With 92 applications to process and slim down to 10, I'm sure they'll require some time

Would a trailer be considered a vehicle in this challenge?

I was wondering if a trailer would be considered a vehicle? Does the vehicle have to be powered by some type of motor?

CPC have these two Arduino shields available in the UK. I would imagine that you'd find them for sale elsewhere.

I don't know if they would be compatible with the Nucleo - you'd have to look carefully at the voltage levels on the I/O pins. The Arduino one is open source, so there will be a schematic on their website somewhere.

I know little about phone stuff, so I couldn't say if they'd do what you want or how easy it would be to program them.

Yes, the SIM900 itself is a chip, but there are modules that use the chip. I realize that I linked to just the chip, but more so just for reference.

SIM900 appears to be a chip rather than a dev module. Am I wrong?

The A000043's page mentions that it is no longer manufactured. Otherwise it appears to be very useful.

I haven't checked the compatibility pin by pin, but here is an Arduino expansion board available: A000043 ARDUINO, SHIELD, ARDUINO, GSM, INTEGRATED ANTENNA | Farnell element14

STM Nucleo boards feature an Arduino expansion port, so this might broaden the area where to look.

Have a look at Design Challenge: Example Application , which gives you an idea of what they consider a good application.

Don't overpromise though, it has to remain realistic and feasible.

There is an enroll button on right hand side of the page. Only a select few of those who enroll will actually be selected to be sponsored by Element14, but you can still participate and be entered to win the Grand Prize package! There is still roughly 33 days left to enroll.
