Will the messaging be in MIDI format over (say) UDP, and then your BBB could unwrap the MIDI content and feed it into the appropriate synth application software?

Via google I noticed there was some RTP-MIDI protocol, but it didn't look like it had much traction - I could be wrong, I only briefly checked.

I wonder if WiFi latency will be an issue though - I have no idea how well the ESP8266 devices perform for that. I guess worst-case you could swap out for a

different wireless technology if WiFi didn't perform as well as expected.

Good idea!
