I have an old guitar hero controller and I've had the same idea for quite awhile now. I've never pushed through with it as other projects take more priority.

I've done some planning but nothing concrete. Here's a video might be able to help when it comes to doing MIDI with Arduino.

Smart Guitar Hero Controller

I want to start a project changing my guitar hero controller into a stand alone music device. The goal is to have it play real sounds through a built in speaker or headphone jack, based on inputs from the 5 colored buttons and strum. It will of course have a limited number of sounds, but enough for novelty!

What is the best micro-controller for this project? Since I have to ask, I'm obviously not quite at the level of embedding my own yet, so perhaps a dev board with an SD card slot for the sounds? Perhaps something like the Teensy 3.5?

Also, is there anyone interested in collaborating in someway?

Any general suggestions on the project are welcome! Thanks!

You could hook up 2 arduino modues - one could be a MIDI controller that converts your Hero into a MIDI controller and a second one could be a MIDI sound synth.

Thanks for the feedback. Standard guitar hero controller, so there are 5 main buttons, 2 aux, and 2 for the strumming switch. The guitar would play play a minimum of 13 sounds based on various button combinations (a full chromatic scale). Preferably, it'd be cool if there were enough resources on a microcontroller if the 2 aux buttons could cycle between sound modes so that the guitar could play an additional 13 sounds for "chords" and maybe another 13 random sounds. I can limit the functionality appropriately for the microcontroller if that's a bit much, I just don't know what's the better direction to head towards.

These would be closed contact DC inputs. I'm open on formats. I want to record real sounds but I want them to be able to ring out as long as you hold the button. Not sure of the best way to do that. I plan to add an audio amplifier circuit so that I can hook up a small built in speaker and have a headphone jack.

Hi Sky,

You need to define your requirements a little more before we can recommend a specific microcontroller.

How many buttons, what types of inputs, how many sounds stored, format of sounds, what level of power output are you looking for?

Each of these answers will enable us to narrow down what options you have for the build.

Mixing sound and visuals, especially movement has been a staple of choreograpy for decades.

I would like to see a better blend of both sound and added sound from light and movement interaction.

These types of sounds I have made for years on my old Casio keyboard.

I thought our MusicTech Challengers might find this inspirational.

It's an interactive art exhibition and experimental musical instrument called Exp.Inst.Rain, by Guatemalan artist Balam Soto. In his own words:

"Exp.Inst.Rain incorporates projection and sound generated by a wireless box made of wood, plexiglas, Arduino, electronic components and custom touch sensors. By touching the box at various points, participants create different sounds; these sounds then generate changes in the projection.

My last blogpost that I posted yesterday (entitled 'Vintage Toy Synthesiser - The End Result') is now saying that it is unpublished, and when I go to edit it to try and republish it only 1 paragraph of the post appears in the text editor.

Can anyone confirm that it appears missing to them?

Thanks for the feedback.

The post appears to be public again at the moment, but this seems to change every now and then.

I've also noticed comments on other posts (including this one) seem to be disappearing and reappearing too.

Different browsers seem to show different states too for me, however this may be a cache thing.

I have been having the same problem with one of my recent blog posts. See:

I have found that if I wait for am hour the blog post is once again available and act normal. When it says that it is unpublished others can't load it and while I can load it I can not reply or make any comments as those links are not listed. Hopefully spannerspencer can check out this problem tomorrow.

Right now it's a dodgy landlord who's sold the house giving us no notice.

Hardware-wise the most common I have is using laser-cutters that don't behave like they should.

Another one I have very often is that I need a bit of code that I don't understand and have to ask for help.

The good thing is that there's something to be learned from these situations..

Some of the public libraries around here have 3D printers available for use by the public. Our libraries had been supplying photocopying and paper printing services for a long time, so this was not that big a stretch in mandate. Maybe you can petition for a similar program in your area.

As far as my problems, I could write a book - this last year was particularly disastrous, but I strive to find more fun things to write about.

Everyone gets to that point where they feel they've hit a brick wall, there's something they perhaps just don't know, perhaps the hardware hasn't arrived, they've ran out of solder or there's something else going amiss.

For me in my projects lately I need access to a 3D Printer, but the one at my local hackspace isn't working!

So what's stopped you from progressing with your musictech project? Either now or previously?
