We’re closing out the fun and excitement of our Music Tech Design Challenge at Music Tech Fest – Berlin (#MTFBerlin). The element14 Hack Camp at #MTFBerlin will provide 50 select artists, hackers, makers and developers with the tools they need to build new ways of interacting with music.

Music Tech Fest runs between the 27th and 30th of May 2016, at the legendary Funkhaus recording studios in East Berlin, playing host to the 10^th anniversary of Music Tech Fest #MTF –

comprising a 3 day on stage festival and 4^th day research symposium.

element14 is sponsoring the integral Hack Camp (noon 28th - noon 29th May, plus prize presentations at 6 pm).

The Grand Prize winner of the Music Tech Design Challenge will attend the event in person as a guest of element14 in association with our sponsors BeagleBoard, Autodesk Fusion 360 and CadSoft Eagle.

The Grand Prize Winner will present their project live on stage to the entire festival as well as enjoy artists and technology throughout the weekend. They can also participate in MTF Labs peer review research sessions and live jam sessions on stage. Check back during the event as we’ll be sharing videos of festivities throughout the weekend.

Ben (Benjamin Heckendorn), Felix and Max from element14’s The Ben Heck Show will be on hand to film an episode at the Music Tech Fest. Ben and Felix will lend expertise to 50 select participants of the element14 Hack Camp – running from noon Saturday until noon Sunday.

The element14 Hack Camp is the central maker zone in the front of the show; everyone walks through this area to access meetings and the main stage – so everyone can watch as inventions are born.

#MTF received over 150 applications and will announce 50 select hackers and inventors to participate onsite. element14 is providing competitors with kits that include Beagle Bone Blacks, Raspberry Pis, Arduinos, microphones, speakers, LEDs and other necessities.

All teams competing in the element14 Hack Camp will present their final invention on stage – with the winner awarded a $2,500 USD ultimate shopping cart from element14.com.

The element14 Hack Camp at Music Tech Fest Berlin

In the fall of 2015 element14.com wondered – what could our members invent that would enable and extend the ability to manipulate audio – whether from a musical instrument or voice or recordings or the sounds in the space around them? 15 Challengers were selected to receive a free kit, featuring the BeagleBone BlackBeagleBone Black. There were many great submissions for final projects, but in the end we narrowed selection to three finalists.

Music can calm us, excite us, motivate us and lift our spirits. Music comes in all forms and form factors – even ambient noise can have positive effects on mood and productivity.^{^[1]}

There has never been a point in our shared human history where so many have the power to access such a wide range of musical options. There are millions of songs available for individual download on iTunes or Google Music, there are apps that offer streaming playlists – built on the fly based on your personal preferences. Then there are apps like Coffivitity (that offer the background noises of a coffee shop) or Thunderspace (that captures ambient sounds in stereoscopic 3D).

But beyond consuming so many different types of music and sound from across the globe, the tools, instruments and technology to create music has never been more widely accessible. This access jumps exponentially with the growth and support of the open source development community. Whether it’s with hardware or software, more and more people are experimenting with creating their personal life soundtrack. And beyond playing instruments or simply recording sounds lies the area of sound effect manipulation.

In the music industry, the electronics that are used to modify sounds are called effects units. The most common form factor is a “stompbox” or foot pedals that can be connected to any fretted instrument, keyboard or microphone. They can consist of analog or digital circuitry. They usually have LEDs to determine if the unit is on or to indicate which type of effect is currently selected. They have to output the modified signal to an amplifier or a recording device.

That’s a lot of electronics going on.

Which got us at element14.com wondering – what could our members invent that would enable and extend the ability to manipulate audio – whether from a musical instrument or voice or recordings or the sounds in the space around you?

The perfect platform for this challenge is the open source BeagleBone Black. In fact, that’s the only required component for anyone to enter a build into this competition.

What might a Music Tech Challenge Project look like?

How about connecting your favorite hand held gaming devices into a system that lets you sample, echo, and reverb the hypnotic beeps and tunes of your games into a personalized pop tune?
How about a backpack with speakers and a BeagleBone that’s accepting wireless input from “buttons” on the bottom of your shoes? You’ll never miss a beat if the beat is based on how you’re dancing. . .
How about a good old fashioned wah-wah pedal? But maybe it can take input from a variety of sources beyond a guitar or microphone.

Synopsis:

Kazumi is an accessible instrument for aspiring musicians and makers. It is a completely new interface that is designed to be engaging for anyone that is interested in making music. Its design has been subject to many different constraints in order to remove as many barriers to participation as possible. Each of the seven surfaces is a touch-pad that is subdivided into five configurable electrodes.

Synopsis:

This project would include various 3D printed parts(which will act as the instrument) ,combined with the Beagle bone and Capacitive Touch Sensor that you play with your limbs . As part of the drum kit there will also be an option to upload recorded sound to soundcloud.com using the soundcloud API.

Project: Hexynth
Synopsis:

My project idea is Hexynth: an open source system of snap-together, hexagonal, electronic music building blocks, which can be programmed using JavaScript, and used for teaching music synthesis and coding. Each hexagonal “module” will have a different function: some of these will be synth modules, for example: different types of oscillator, envelopes or filters, but others will be generic input or output hardware modules to add a physical aspect to turn the music synthesis circuit into an instrument. Examples of generic input modules might include a Light-Dependent-Resistor, pressure sensor or potentiometers that can be used to control gain or any other aspects of the sound. Examples of output modules include RGB outputs to blink lights along with the music or a speaker.

Project: Vintage Toy Synthesiser
Synopsis:

For my project I will be converting a vintage wooden toy piano into a standalone digital synthesiser. An ongoing interest of mine has been modifying and ‘hacking’ vintage toy pianos, which has spawned a couple of existing projects such as an experimental sound design project as well as turning one into a simple USB-MIDI controller. This particular project will involve using the BeagleBone Black as the sound engine and brain of the synth, converting each key of the existing key mechanism into digital buttons for triggering sound, as well as adding a set of switches and potentiometers to the body of the piano for controlling the synthesis engine. By the end of the project I hope to have a unique, aesthetically-pleasing, fully-working standalone electronic instrument.

Project: Nomad
Synopsis:

The core concept behind the project is to utilize the BeagleBone Black to create a synthesizer which interacts and responds to input from our natural environment. Synthesizers typically exists in a studio landscape, with either a software or a tactile hardware human interface.These take many forms from eurorack modular systems to MIDI controlled drum machines, but rarely do they allow for our natural environment to interface and interact with their parameters. What if wind could determine tone colour? What if the humidity shaped the low pass filter? These are questions which we will address in our project: nomad. We aim to create an electronic instrument independant of the studio which will probe data sources such as weather, date, location and more to define it's signal path and sound parameters. In addition to shaping sound synthesis, these inputs will also control various effects and sequencers.

Project: Harmonizer
Synopsis:

My aim for this project is to create a stompbox that, after a training phase in which the musicians plays a sequence of chords, would be capable of capturing the harmonic and rhythmic content within that particular section, and reproduce several lead lines/arpeggiated fills whenever engaged. This way, by laying out a simple harmonic backing structure, the pedal will generate melodic fills and closures on top of that.

Project: The Electronic Violin
Synopsis:

The “Beagle-fied” Electronic Violin, is a reinvention of the Violin as a controller. While the instrument could still be played by a Violinist, it could also be played by a beginner with less skill. Anyone who picked up the eViolin, would generate good tone. Many of the control aspects of the acoustic violin will be taken in to consideration. While there is a similar look to the Violin body and bow, a key difference is that there are no strings.

Project: Motion Tune
Synopsis:

This projects intends to use an accelerometer and altimeter to record motion data. By wearing or attaching a series of G-sensors(accelerometers) to somebody or something, the data can be interpreted and than converted into playable sound using the BeagleBone Black.

Project: The Live Workbench
Synopsis:

This project will attempt to capture the sound of hand tools working wood and listening to wood being worked. Tools such as a hand plane ,card scrapers, chisel, saws equipped with piezos(different kinds). Also the other way around with wood fitted with piezos, the different sound/tone of wood species will be captured and interpreted into music.

Project: tEChnOLOGICAL Communion
Synopsis:

The idea is to recieve energetic impulses from plants (electrical or otherwise), while as well recieving other frequencies from the environment, through temperature sensors, humidity sensors, microphones, piezo transducers etc. This information would then be used to generate a soundscape and visual generative art. The array would be joined with a suit which would utilize smart fabrics to recieve input from the wearers movement. Through this, a human can interact with the generative music, to add the aspect of humanity into the constellation

Project: Therapy Guitar
Synopsis:

To create a guitar optimized in its architecture and electronics for military front-line deployment. Such an instrument would be equipped with a built-in sound system with sensors and acoustic signal processing electronics capable of both monitoring the psychologically-driven physiological state of a soldier player, as well as using appropriate algorithms to sculpt the instrument's tone in such a way that it would have the maximum possible positive effect on the player's mood and morale, as well as that of his buddies who might be listening. In short, such a guitar could be an effective tool in saving soldiers' lives, and particularly those most prone to combat stress and depression.

This project will seek to create a union of the analog generation capabilities of the SN76477. The chip can produce many different types of sounds, so the final product would likely be composed of multiple independent circuits, to be physically or digitally swappable.

Project: DBrass
Synopsis:

I'm going to build a digital version of the kulintang. Those gongs (brass) will be replaced by a rubber and attached a piezo sensor to the gong to trigger sound. I've been planning for this project for a year now and this challenge is a perfect time for it. This project will help us build more devices so that we can practice our music without disturbing other people. If get selected, it will be a start in digitizing all other indigenous instruments.
