How do I download the HW and SW labs for PIIP?

Greetings! I'm trying to follow the labs and examples for the Path II Programmable training series (both the HW and SW labs), but I can't find the labs to download. Is this still available?

Path II Programmable: Embedded Vision Project on the Ultra96-V2

The Path II Programmable training project trains element14 members by providing them with free FPGA/SoC training modules with lab exercises. Once the trains and labs have been completed, the trainees will build a project with the Avnet Ultra96-V2 development board, which is an Arm-based, Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ [emoticon:7d377b609b6f44bf9290e3d8a0b9a733] MPSoC development board based on the Linaro 96Boards Consumer Edition (CE) speciﬁcation.

This project was developed by element14 top member [mention:dc11ece8204f479e8dce2a47a33b20d3:e9ed411860ed4f2ba0265705b8793d05]. He says that "I'd like to implement an embedded vision system. The input would be a H264/5 video stream from an IP camera or an NVR. The input would be an RTSP stream over the network (either wifi or ethernet). If I can get the base configuration working I'd like to extend it to multiple inputs and possibly an output to the NVR. I'd like to have some level of detection/identification capability. My thought is to use one of the quantized neural network implementations that I've tried on the PYNQ-Z2 (new overlays are available for the Ultra96)."

PIIP - PetaLinux 2018.3 Installation missing files

Hi,

This is a question for my fellow trainees. I just discovered that I'm missing some files from my PetaLinux install and I just wanted to ask whether others are having this problem or if I have made an error installing or am using a corrupt install.

I normally run the SDK from the shortcut icon on my VM desktop and that has been working fine. In PetaLinux Lab 4 the SDK is started from the command line - xsdk and that failed because it couldn't find the Java runtime required by the SDK (it was a warning but it failed to start). When PetaLinux was installed the instructions were to modify the .bashrc file so that the PATH was changed to point to the PetaLinux install files. The JRE files are missing from my PetaLinux file tree (/tools/petalinux-v2018.3-final) but are there for the Xilinx file tree (/tools/Xilinx).

I copied files to eliminate the jre problem but encountered more missing files.

Anyone else have this problem? If not I'll have to hunt for why I am missing files.

The problem is not because the installation misses files, but because the lab instruction forgot to mention the step of setting up environment before starting up SDK.

Here's a sequence of commands you need:

export SWT_GTK3=0

. /tools/Xilinx/SDK/2018.3/settings64.sh

xsdk &

Thanks, I guess I was looking for confirmation that starting the SDK from the command line did not work. You probably have the same issue.

Which labs is that for? I tried launching SDK from command line and it didn't work, but the desktop shortcut worked fine with no ill side effects that i've noticed. I've done labs 1-4 and am finishing tonight.

Great points Charles and I concur. I design with FPGA's at work but use Intel devices and their Quartus software. I have had the Xilinx Vivado tools on my machine for a year in addition to several dev. kits at work as I have tried to switch some new designs to Xilinx. However, I have not had the time. The Xilinx documentation is great but it is not really geared for beginners trying to learn. It is geared for professional trying to get through a design. These courses like Path-II-Programmable makes it easier to learn as it gives you labs and instructions for "dummies" backed by tangible projects for you to complete.

I really enjoy the Path II Programmable training materials even it is only at the introductory level. It serves the training purpose very well - help trainees to overcome the challenge of developing with FPGA and encourage people dig further into the devices and use them in their projects and products. Using my own experiences as an example, I probably tried learning FPGA at least 5 times in the past 10 years, but never lasted more than a month each time. The biggest challenge was lack of detailed instructions plus very slow progress. On the other hand, this training program provides step-by-step instructions and gradually dig deeper and deeper. You can see the results and feel the achievement. It attracts me to finish the labs one by one. So far, I have completed the whole hardware training course - both videos and labs. It's a great journey and thank you and our sponsors for this great program. However, after finishing the hardware module, I feel there's a force luring me to learn more in FPGA design. Thus, I ask if you can discuss with our kindly sponsor Avnet regarding adding their Ultra96 advanced course materials as one more award.

That would be great! I have watched a webinar from Xilinx just couple days ago: "Accelerating AI Camera Development with Xilinx VITIS", and there was a brief introduction to VITIS. One of the questions asked at the end was about SDSoC and VITIS, and the answer was that SDSoC will be replaced by VITIS, and he also added that the workflows will be quite similar (so, if you used SDSoC, should feel comfortable moving to VITIS)

I'm glad to hear there will be more P2P. I couldn't commit to the time required when enrollment was open for this one (although now I would be able to). I'll be keen to see what further ones are coming. Too soon for a Vitis introductory course? That would be cool.

Well, there will be more Path to Programmable programs. So, I would probably reserve the advanced training for the future.

I know the schedule says 27th but I guess sometimes things don't quite go to plan, lots of applications to read etc. In Path II Programmable: About Training Project Randall states:

Hope to make the announcement on Friday or Monday.

So hopefully we'll hear something on Monday
