I recall the University of Leeds doing a POV globe project a while ago and creating the Death Star from Star Wars on it:

On a side note, HYPERVSN have been doing some interesting stuff with POV with synchronised arrays of their Kino-Mo product

Looks like it is mainly aimed at the retail market at the moment.

A clear explanation of what you are aiming to do. I always liked these persistence images as well, although I've actually made a successful one.

I am actually pretty excited to see the outcome of this project. I played with POV displays before and although beautiful and fun they can be kind of frustrating to make.
I always found when I worked with them I went through a lot of code, test, repeat. There was always something I didn't like or didn't look quite right.
I wish you luck and don't get too frustrated keep at when something doesn't work since I am sure the end result is going to be worth it!
