PiCasso Design Challenge Winners Announcement

After 15+ weeks of designing, painting, researching, prototyping, coding and testing, our PiCasso Design Challenge has come to a close.

Our challengers were tasked to use the Raspberry Pi Model 3 B+ to create works of art or master pieces. The judges have tallied up their thoughts and finalized the grand prize and runner up winners, as well as all finishers.

New Honorable Mention Prize

We had so many amazing entries that two Honorable Mentions were awarded the GoPro Hero 7 White. Please congratulate all the winners and participants of the PiCasso Design Challenge!

Project Summary

Our Grand Prize winner, Enrico, really took the spirit of this challenge to heart by running an Art Exhibition in Gent, Belgium. He has won a DJI Mavic 2 Pro Videography Drone*.

Art-A-Tronic was an interactive art exhibit in Gent. Enrico completed seven of his nine goals: an augmented mannequin that can host Raspberry Pi Computer vision, binaural hearing which turns to face you and a MQTT connection to the "BORG Communication Nexus", an aptly named Cube featuring a MQTT Server. Aside from the articulating mannequin, the Communication Cube talks with a Raspberry Pi Smart Mirror and a cage full of Arduino controlled Bird Automata.

Project Summary

Our Runner Up, Luislabmo, set the element14 Community on fire with this impeccably designed, pepper's ghost-based, Raspberry Pi powered Hologram machine. He won a Nikon D3500 DSLR with a lense and lighting kit*

Luis designed, 3D printed and built a Hologram Pyramid with inbuilt LEDs to give an extra layer of lighting immersion to the projected image.

Using the official Raspberry Pi screen to "project" onto angled acrylic, Luis was able to create a Peppers Ghost hologram effect within the pyramid space. Then this 3D image is lit using NeoPixel LEDs seated on a PCB which Luis also designed himself.

From 3D design, 3D printing, custom code to custom PCB, Luis has outdone himself.

He even went so far to connect the pins on the Pi Massive to an actual Raspberry Pi hidden within it.

Welcome to the PiCasso Design Challengers Page!

Our 'PiCasso' Design Challenge, a collaboration/association with the Pi Foundation, has now launched. The 15+ Challengers will use the Raspberry Pi Model 3 B+Raspberry Pi Model 3 B+ to create a masterpiece, from an art installation to a home decoration. These Challengers will receive a Kit for FREE.

It's been a wonderful month of amazing and varied applications, so much so that we've upped the sponsored challengers from 15 to 20. They ranged from interactive canvases, reactive trees, and computer vision installations to art exhibitions.

Kinetic Art Mobile

Synopsis: A hanging mobile, where the objects are controllable. At the end of each arm (pivoting around a central shaft) of the mobile would be a object that contains a small electric fan that can provide propulsion, to cause the object to move. My idea was to have each of the object act out an emotion, i.e playful, fearful, anger, etc.

Synopsis: The project consists of an interactive fabric wall with a mechanical actuator that can obtain 3D curved reliefs. It also has a projector that shows changing artistic compositions according to the external noise of the environment.

It’s never too late to join the PiCasso Design Challenge! You don’t even need to be a sponsored challenger. Anyone can join at any time before the project submission deadline. To judge the merits of the PiCasso Design Challenge applications and final project builds, element14 asked the help of a panel of experts to provide their knowledge.

So, without further ado, element14 is pleased to introduce our panel of judges:

Raspberry Pi Foundation - Specialist Judge

As always, a specialist judge from the Raspberry Pi Foundation will be giving their expert feedback and advice. The Raspberry Pi Foundation is a UK-based charity that works to put the power of digital making into the hands of people globally, so that they can understand and shape our increasingly digital world, solve the problems that matter to them, and become equipped for the jobs of the future. They provide the Raspberry Pi Model 3 B+Raspberry Pi Model 3 B+ a low-cost, high-performance computer that people use to learn, solve problems and have fun. The Raspberry Pi Foundation provides outreach and education to help more people access computing and digital making.

element14 Team - Community Judges

Senior members of the element14 Community Team will provide their support and input on this Design Challenge.

They will be tasked with checking in on challengers, helping to connect engineers with solutions and making sure everyone adheres to the rules!

Their combined experience in engineering, design challenges and the Maker scene will be tested as they help lead the team of judges and challengers to the finish line.

All 15 of the sponsored Challengers for the PiCasso Design Challenge will receive for FREE the the kit detailed in the table below.

Our judges will choose 15 applicants to become sponsored challengers, and they will receive the kit free of charge. If you are not a sponsored challenger, you can still compete as a non-sponsored or independent challenger. See note below.*

From art installation to home decoration with the Raspberry Pi Model 3 B+.

Integrate the low-cost Raspberry Pi Model 3 B+ into your project for the chance to win a prize package worth up to $2,100.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation, in collaboration with element14, would like to introduce the PiCasso Design Challenge. The PiCasso Design Challenge will choose 15 sponsored challengers to receive a Challenger Kit for FREE.

What are Design Challenges?

Design Challenges are 15-week-long build challenges where applicants submit a project idea to a panel of judges. The top 15 are sent the official challengers build kit and spend the next 15 weeks building and blogging about it on the element14 community. After the 15 weeks are over, the judges choose which projects and blogs deserve the prizes and glory that comes with being a Design Challenge winner. Every challenge has a theme and a kit partner, and we run a Raspberry Pi Model 3 B+ themed Design Challenge once per year.

The deadline for project application submissions is 1st March 2019.

All Challengers must build their projects in accordance with the Challenge's Terms and Conditions. All projects must include the New Raspberry Pi Model 3 B+Raspberry Pi Model 3 B+.
