I'm glad to see that someone else has realised that all these cloud connected gizzmos are great, right up until the cloud or the link to the cloud, breaks.

It's also a security concern that people are publishing to the world that they are home (or away).

I believe Peter Scargill ( https://tech.scargill.net/ ) has done a lot of work in getting Node Red local.

I am planning this general outline to ensure completion by the due date

This is one of the critical parts of your design, so I would try to add some timings to ensure you know when you start going off track.

You've identified the longer lead time of the metalwork, but you also need to establish what parts are "critical" to finishing, and what parts are "nice add-ons" so you can either include or drop until later.

The PCB will have a lead time and might become a hinderance, so perhaps using prototyping board during the intial proving might be an option worth considering.

The additon to your first blog works.

I've always kept adding links to the older blogs at each step.

Hi James,

This is a great project, but could be hard for people to follow without a tiny intro/diagram to explain what the project is about (and perhaps a link to the first blog post), at the top of each blog post. This is especially true in this case, because I only realized slightly what this project was about after half-way through the blog post. I had to search on your name, to find the first post, to fully understand what this project was about. I'm glad I did though, because it is really impressive that you're intending to build all this into an appliance where it can fit totally hidden from view. The safety aspect (detecting gases) is really cool too. Looking forward to seeing how the sheet metal is worked, since that's something I've wanted to learn for ages : )

p.s. Congrats on the baby!

Wow! You are really cooking on your specification and system specifications! The project is coming right along. Like many projects the end product is sort of the tip of the iceberg, with a huge amount of work/re-work underneath it all.

Good luck as you push this project forward (most likely with sleep deprivation due to your recent arrival).
