Pi Chef: Debriefing with Our First-Time Challengers

The Raspberry Pi Foundation, in collaboration with element14, recently sponsored a design challenge in which contestants were invited to conceptualize a culinary-themed device that featured the Raspberry Pi 3Raspberry Pi 3. Example applications included improvements to the fields of food safety, preparation, delivery, etc. We were overwhelmed by the level of enthusiasm that this design challenge elicited from our community, and we ultimately invited fifteen sponsored challengers to join the competition. For many of our contestants, this was their first time participating in a design challenge, and we wanted to know more about their creation process and overall project experience. Check out the following interview with crackedpepper, glennvanderveer, and dougw.

Q1: How did you find out about the element14 Community?

Adrian: I first discovered the element14 Community via an Instagram post that popped up on my feed. I follow the Raspberry Pi hashtag and the initial Pi Chef design challenge announcement used that tag, which led me to the design challenge page within the Community.

Glenn: Doug Wong introduced me to the Community sometime last year. He was competing in the Safe and Sound design challenge and shared his project during a "lunch and learn" session at work.

Douglas: Several years ago I was investigating PSoC 4PSoC 4 and came across the Smarter Life design challenge on the element14 Community.

Q2: What inspired you to enter the Pi Chef design challenge?

Adrian: I had been looking to start a project with the Raspberry Pi for awhile but I just hadn't found the time or motivation. The challenge seemed like the perfect opportunity to give myself some boundaries on what I could do and how long I had to complete the project. I discussed entering this challenge with some of my friends mainly as a laugh and many of them encouraged me to do so.

Douglas: In response to some discussions on element14, I was trying to come up with a project in which I could collaborate with a new member to encourage more participation.

Glenn: It was a combination of Doug having the physical electronic components and 3D printing skills, which I could complement as a software developer.

Q3: What were some of the biggest challenges you had to overcome during the competition?

Adrian: The biggest challenges I faced were all related to my lack of experience in certain disciplines. Previously, I had very little experience with circuit design or construction and basically no experience with manufacturing. The manufacturing was probably the biggest issue since I didn’t have the correct tools or access to a decent working environment.

Douglas: Designing and building a large aesthetically pleasing counter-top machine was a huge challenge. Also, the logistics of collaborating with my partner, Glenn, were difficult to work out. It proved to be very hard to work efficiently in parallel.

Q4: If you had the opportunity to do the project again, what would you do differently?

Glenn: Without a doubt, I'd drop the whole Python GUI (Graphical User Interface). I spent a lot of time trying to find a drag-and-drop IDE (Integrated Development Environment) and when I couldn't, more time was spent searching Python GUI libraries. In the end, the Google Assistant didn't really need to have a GUI.

Adrian: While there is a lot I could have done differently, I don't think I would change a thing if I were to attempt the project again. The learning experience of my failures was far too valuable to miss out on. Ideally, I would have spent more time planning and would have been better prepared by either buying or organizing access to better tools.

Q5: Throughout the duration of the design challenge, did you achieve anything in particular that was especially satisfying? Were you able to successfully accomplish something for the first time?

Douglas: Designing a fully customized computer-controlled (voice-controlled) machine with complex mechanics that worked well and looked good was very satisfying.

Glenn: The most satisfying moment I experienced was when I watched the platter spin for the first time via voice control. This was the first time I used the Google Assistant on something other than an Android device.

Adrian: Integrating so many different technologies for the first time was very rewarding (motion detection, voice recognition, and GPIO). This was also my first time using servo motors, and that in itself was a very enjoyable process.

Q6: Doug and Glenn, you submitted a joint entry into the challenge. What was the origin of this idea, and how do you feel the project went?

Douglas: There were several discussions within the element14 Community about the desirability of collaborative projects and also about encouraging new members to participate, so I resolved to see if it was feasible to combine these ideas and act upon them within the context of a design challenge. The idea for the Spice of Pi project took quite a bit of thought since we had to determine how to efficiently and successfully divide the work between the two of us. The project had significant technical and scheduling problems that had to be overcome, but it turned out about as good as possible given the challenges we faced. Even though it required more work to collaborate, I was worried that if we won, it would have been perceived that we had had an unfair advantage. I view this as the main deterrent to trying more collaborations. I had a good partner and lots of fun with the project and learned a lot, but I'm not sure I would recommend collaboration in a design challenge, especially if the object is to win. The extra work and schedule juggling involved in making collaboration feasible resulted in increased pressure and work that isn't publicly perceived or evaluated. Glenn and I each generated at least 10 blogs excluding any cross-educational activities. And, of course, if you do win sponsorship, finisher prizes, or challenge prizes, they have to be split between partners. However, if you enjoy collaborating, it will likely add an interesting dimension to your project.

Glenn: It was mostly Doug's idea to collaborate. He wanted to encourage new people to enter/contribute to the element14 Community, and it became a cooperative project mostly due to my lack of access to hardware components and 3D printers combined with his lack of desire to do programming. The project went well, but better time management on our part would have made the end result much better.

Q7: Do you plan on participating in future design challenges?

Douglas: Yes, I always benefit from the exercise. This particular project showed that a collaborative project and team need to be selected very carefully. We did a lot of things well, but collaboration still really impacted the schedule. Although we worked hard, got everything working, and ended up submitting well over 20 blogs, we were still a couple of blogs away from a fully satisfactory conclusion.

Glenn: Definitely. I really enjoyed working on this one.

Adrian: I will definitely participate in more design challenges since this one was such a great experience. The major obstacle for me entering in the future will be my travel schedule for work. I would also like to give a big thanks to element14 and the Community. This design challenge was a great introduction to the Community and being selected as a sponsored challenger was a privilege.

After 11+ weeks of design, research, prototyping, coding and testing the final submission date for Pi Chef Design Challenge as passed.

Grand Prize - Smart Range Hood

Our grand prize winner James built a truly smart 40" range hood.

Including custom sheet metal, 3D printed enclosures, thermal imaging courtesy of the Panasonic Grid Eye, custom PCBs for the custom sensor array enclosure to protect the electronics.

On top of the hardware was a interactive app with control of the fans and a touchscreen display on the range hood for interacting with the hood and featuring the, ever popular, "Summon Husband" button. the judges were impressed with the array of skills James exhibited from design, coding, NodeRed, Fabrication, 3D printing, PCB Design. James documents his fails as well as victories and gave us an amazing insight into the design and build process.

James has accomplished some of the highest quality blogs and one of the most functional designs we have ever seen in Design Challenges.

Jonathan Schooler scoops up the silver medal with his modular IoT smoker, "the Cooker Connector"

Jonathan uses AndroidThings running on Raspberry Pi, a servo and his own PCB Raspberry Pi Hat to connect to multiple temperature probes.

The user interface runs on a mobile app allowing you to be notified when your meal is up to temperature or warning you that things are getting too hot and that you should close the air vents.

Similarly to James, the judges were blown away by the multiple disciplines needed to accomplish this build, from Android app

development, or the PCB design, right the way to the hands on mechanical skills in creating the control wires.

Jonathan also experienced an issue which caused him to change direction on his build. The Judges were very impressed with how he handled it and his blog post exploring his options.

Judges were especially blown away by Jonathan talking through his process of calibrating the off the shelf thermistors for custom projects.

Avner Fernandes - Project Summary

Avner takes 3rd place with his smart scales,"Bake Mate".

Using the Raspberry Pi, sense hat, touch screen, strain gauge, to create a set of smart scales that store recipes and guide you through weighing out the ingredients.

Over the process Avner posted all of his code, his plans, his wiring diagrams and everything you would need to replicate his project.

Judges were blown away by how Avner laid out his goals and beat them every single week, then successfully beating his higher stretch goals.

Although the electronics of the project were not in a case or particularity finished looking, the quality of blogs, code and a working GUI really pulled this project over the finish line.

To judge the merits of the Pi Chef Design Challenge applications and final project builds, element14 asked the help of a panel of experts who agreed to be the judges of the Challenge.

As always, a specialist judge from the Raspberry Pi Foundation will be giving their expert feedback and advice.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation is a UK-based charity that works to put the power of digital making into the hands of people globally, so that they can understand and shape our increasingly digital world, solve the problems that matter to them, and become equipped for the jobs of the future. They provide the Raspberry Pi 3Raspberry Pi 3 Raspberry Pi 3Raspberry Pi 3 a low-cost, high-performance computer that people use to learn, solve problems and have fun. The Raspberry Pi Foundation provides outreach and education to help more people access computing and digital making.

It’s never too late to join the Pi Chef Design Challenge! You don’t even need to be a sponsored challenger. Anyone can join at any time before the project submission deadline. Pi Chef Design Challenge

Cook, Bake or Brew with the Raspberry Pi.

Integrate the low-cost Raspberry Pi into your project for the chance to win a prize package worth up to $1800.

The Pi Chef Design Challenge will choose 15 sponsored challengers to receive a Challenger Kit for FREE.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation, in collaboration with element14, would like to introduce the Pi Chef Design Challenge

The 15 sponsored challengers will use the Raspberry Pi as the main ingredient to improve and expand their creativity in the kitchen. These projects should show how the Raspberry Pi can be used to improve the world of food, kitchen safety, brewing, baking and food preparation.

Example applications could include:

• Kitchen scales that have a recipe on screen, it monitors your quantities and guides you through the cooking process

• Upgrade your fridge so that it keeps track of your food levels

• Build your own Sous Vide Machine by sampling temperatures and controlling heat with a web app

• Automatic cocktail machine

• Interactive cook book

• A way to track food that is removed from the fridge, so you get an alert when you are running low.

• Menu suggestions based on what you have in your fridge

• A more automated way to track calories/nutrition.

• Automatic beer brewing bot

• Fridge-to-sofa IoT beer delivery system

The Pi Chef Challenge will have 15 sponsored Challengers who will each receive the Kit for free.

But anyone can join the Challenge as a non-sponsored Challenger.

What are Design Challenges?

Design Challenges are 11-week-long build challenges where applicants submit a project idea to a panel of judges. The best 15 are sent the official challengers build kit and spend the next 11 weeks building and blogging about it on the element14 community. After the 11 weeks are over, the judges choose which projects and blogs deserve the prizes and glory that comes with being a Design Challenge winner. Every challenge has a theme and a kit partner, and we run a Raspberry Pi themed Design Challenge once per year.

How to Cook Turkey with Tech

Happy Thanksgiving to all our amazing American Community members.

May I wish that your birds are plump and you cholesterol be low!

With the Holiday season upon us I would like present to you all my guide to cooking your Holiday Turkey, while loosing as few eyebrows as humanly possible.

For the sake of full disclosure, I have to admit, as some of you already know, I am a full born an bread Red Coat British citizen, writing this in the north of England at the moment.

But as a proud Englishman, Maker and a bit of a chubby cook (Never trust a skinny chef), I can arguably say that I know how to cook a turkey, as I do for my Christmas Dinner once a year and most weekends for my, ever so British Sunday Roast.

Here are my alternative methods of cooking turkey and sides this Holiday season.

1) Raspberry Pi powered Sous Vide

When one cooks meat, the goal is to get the internal temperature of the meat to whatever value indicates that the meat is tender and delcious. For most meats, this is in the 50 °C – 65 °C range. However, to cook them expediently we use cooking surfaces that are significantly hotter than that — a frying pan on high can get up to 240 °C, four times the target temperature! The result is that the outside of your steak is cooked to 200 °C so the inside can be 55 °C.
Sous vide is a method of food preparation that operates on a simple principle; instead of using a cooking surface that is very hot so the food cooks quickly, use a cooking surface that is exactly the temperature you want your food to be (or, if you’re impatient, slightly above). Then, all you need to do is let your food reach thermal equilibrium with the cooking surface and it’s ready to eat.

2) Deep Fried Turkey

Deep Fried Turkey is one of those mind blowing cooking techniques that tastes so good when done right and is so incredibly stupid when it is done wrong!

4) Cook it with your Cars Engine Bay

As per the grandly named, Manifold Destiny, why not cook your turkey while driving to the in-laws house?

Using the heat from the engine, tinfoil and with no understanding of e-coli or oil poisoning, you can perfectly cook your holiday meal under your bonnet.... Tasty..

5) Use a Raspberry Pi Powered Microwave

Nathan Broadbent was fed up of his Microwave lacking features, so turbo charged it with his Raspberry Pi and an Arduino

Clock is automatically updated from the internet
Can be controlled with voice commands
Can use a barcode scanner to look up cooking instructions from an online database
