Interesting what is inside the desk! Nice use of materials for low cost yet reasonable rigidity.

As one idea, 0.5mm thick white acetal ('Acetal C Natural Sheet' also known as 'Ertacetal/POM C') is a milky color that could show LEDs through it - and is available is large sheets (2mx1m) that could cover the entire desk surface and is easy to cut to size.

Here it is with a mobile phone (Galaxy S5 set to full brightness) pressed against it:
