Hello from June 2016. The tutorial still works with some corrections (I'm running an up-to-date Raspbian GNU/Linux 7 (wheezy) on RPi2):

1) Apt-get was "Unable to locate package openssl-dev", and this problem at the very first step nearly broke my will to continue... After some research I've installed "libssl-dev" - it seems, that the package was just renamed:

root@rpi2:~# apt-get install libssl-dev

2) If you gonna test mosquitto under root, you have to add line "user root" into /etc/mosquitto.conf. By default mosquitto should be run from /etc/init.d under user "mosquitto" and it's working directory must be /etc/mosquitto.

3) To publish messages by means of "mosquitto_pub" command, you need more symlinks:

root@rpi2:~# ln -s /usr/local/lib/libmosquitto.so.1 /usr/lib/libmosquitto.so.1

Now the following command will send message to client's web browser:

root@rpi2:~# mosquitto_pub -u username -P password -t /World -m "test message from shell"

Hi Margot

Nice tutorial. I always spent some time trying to make Mosquito work over OpenSSL. How did you created and installed certificates on both client and server?

Very nice and compact!

Been going through similar process to get Mosquitto up running, but this is by far the most complete ´script´ I have seen.

To get this running as a service, have a look at last part of https://harizanov.com/wiki/wiki-home/raspberry-pi/how-to-rasbperry-pi-install-mosquitto-with-websockets-enable/

This worked for me.
