I used to have a Canon Powershot which had great macro focus (~1cm!!). I now have a Olympus PEN E-P3, which is great for most stuff, but not for macro with its stock lens (14-42mm Zuiko). I tried to reverse mount a Pentax lens (with 49mm-reverse to Micro4/3 converter), but because the focal distance is shorter, it didn't magnify enough. In the end I bought close-up filters, which give a reasonable result. One of the benefits is that the lens doesn't get in the way of the flash. And indeed, I normally use some white cardboard to reflect the flash.

Hi Monte,

You can also use a white cardstock to bounce the flash back to your target by indirect light. That will get you fewer reflections and good color.

Is it your camera or the LED's that appear to have a slight red tint? Just curious.

Reflections are always the issue, and controlling them is the biggest problem I've had.

You might want to look at extension rings for your existing lens.

If your existing lens is fully electronic, then finding a manual lens is the answer.

After that a good tripod and F16 or F22 is your friend.

You can also do focus stacking which I understand works well, but I haven't needed to use it ...yet.
