Sudden Impact Wearables Design Challenge
About this Challenge	Challenger List

Individuals will be selected for the “Sudden Impact” Wearable Technology Design Challenge (henceforth, "The Challenge") on the basis of quality of applications: we expect a full and complete description of why you want to take part in this challenge and your initial ideas for utilising the proposed kit effectively.

Individuals selected for the Challenge will be required to blog about their projects on a weekly basis. Additional content such as videos and designs will be an added bonus when it comes to judging competitors.

Individuals selected for this challenge are responsible for taking reasonable precautions for ensuring their own safety, in both the assembly and testing of their proposed solutions.

Failure by a selected individual to participate in accordance with the parameters of the Challenge, provided no reasonable cause for this inability to participate is given, may result in exclusion from future Road Tests and challenges.

The final submission date for this challenge is Friday, March 27, 2015.

This competition is not open to individuals employed by the Premier Farnell group of companies, Analog Devices, Tektronix, Electrolube or Leeds Beckett University.

All Analog Devices products provided to the participant are provided “as is” and Analog Devices makes no warranties or representations of any kind with respect thereto. In no event will Analog Devices be liable to participant or any third party for any incidental, special, direct, indirect, or consequential damages resulting from participant’s use of any Analog Devices products.

Project: Real Time Data for Coaches
Synopsis:

I have had a number of friends sustain serious injuries while playing high school and other youth sports, so this challenge is very relatable to me. Concussions are very serious injuries and must be treated as such, but they are not always noticeable, and some players continue to play after sustaining a concussion or other serious injury. The obvious solution is that provided in the premise of this challenge, to create a system of notification so that a coach could see real time data regarding the forces and hits that players are subjected to, as well as other vital signs to make sure that the players playing are healthy enough to play.

Synopsis:

My project will be made of two types of units, as described below:

One centralized receiver unit for coach/supervisor with data processing and visual display of each player’s health information and health alarms on the screen of a tablet computer or smart phone.
Multiple wearable health monitor units with health condition alarm for athletes/players, which transmit the data through wireless connections to the centralized receiver

Project: Smart Clothes
Synopsis:

I would like to create a "smart clothes" which can log the health parameters (eg. heart rate, temperature etc) and cycling conditions (eg. acceleration, speed, profile of the trip etc.). If a bicyclist is exposed to visible by clothing, the risk of road accidents can be reduced. The bluetooth connection will be desirable to keep in touch between the dress and the person (via smart phone).

Project: Improved Sports Helmet
Synopsis:

A sports helmet that monitors an athlete's body temperature, heart rate and rhythm as well as head trauma would be implemented to read and transmit these measurements back to a command post. There would be the possibility of adding an oxygen sensor by the athlete's mouth or nose to monitor their O2 intake.

The health related issues I would like to tackle with this setup is the immediate health risks an athlete may face while involved in the sport. These health risks would include heat stroke, sudden heart attack and seriousness of individual concussion as well as long term cumulative concussion force sustained by the athlete.

These risks will each be monitored by an individual or group of sensors.

Project: Impact Monitor for Skiers
Synopsis:

My proposal is to implement an impact monitor for skiers. Its purpose is to monitor and log the accelerations that affect the skier. When my son is on a ski run, I want to see afterwards (maybe at the end of the day) a nice graph of how much G's he had to cope with. If the acceleration exceeds a certain threshold, I want to get an instant notification on my phone (as long as I'm in range). The device should be mounted to the ski helmet. It must be small enough not to disturb normal handling, and it also must not affect the helmet in case of an accident.

Synopsis:

I realized that we wear heart monitors while working out but then do not use them during sporting events. I also realized that sports teams would spring for these items as it would give them a competitive advantage knowing how fast the players were wearing out.

Project: Concussions & Stress Monitor
Synopsis:

I would like to split the project into 2 separate systems, 1 to monitor events that might cause mild traumatic brain injuries and one to monitor physiological stress. The reasons for the split are that the sensors need to be in very different places on the body and the function is completely different. It is also highly undesirable to have wires running around the body as most people will feel this is unacceptable.

Background

At the World Cup in Brazil this year. . .

Germany’s Christoph Kramer took a blow to the head – yet continued to play. Later he admitted to having no memory of the first half of play.[1]

In the United States, The National Football League. . .

A study was released by the NFL that supported the long-held belief that American Football has a high rate of brain damage injuries stating that nearly a third of retired players are expected to develop long-term cognitive problems.[2]

At the Winter Olympics in Sochi. . .

During the Women’s Slopestyle snowboarding final at the Sochi Winter Olympics, Sarka Pancochova, a Czech athlete, crashed headlong onto the piste with such force it cracked her helmet in two[3]. While she was able to get to the bottom of the hill with minimal assistance (and show her damaged headgear to a bemused fellow competitor), it is entirely possible that there will be long term effects which were not evident at the time.

And it’s not just about head trauma. . .

Beyond impact events, there have been incidents in which monitoring technologies might have saved lives. For example, in December 2013, two Scottish teenage soccer players, aged 18 and 13, died within hours of each other. The cause in both instances was deemed to be cardiac arrest[4].

At the moment, diagnosis of the significance of an impact event or even routine monitoring is limited to trained medical personnel. Even then, it is usually guesswork as to how much force was involved; particularly those events which occur during amateur or school matches. Understanding the force of an impact at the time it occurs enables timely diagnoses to be made.

The Challenge

Given the continued advances in wearable technology, it is possible to create a solution that has the following features:

It should provide vital health information about player / competitor while they are out on the field of play (soccer fields to ski runs): e.g., measure impact events upon a helmet or headgear or provide real time heart rate information.
It should be either be an unobtrusive addition to a usual uniform or installable into existing gear.
It should have the ability to communicate via wireless or Bluetooth to a phone app to inform coaches and other supervisory personnel about the health status of the players. This software should be open source to allow further development for specific scenarios.
It should issue alerts when necessary, e.g., when impacts are above a certain amount of force or heart rate above a certain number of beats per minute. There should be a means to look at aggregate data, e.g. should be able to look at the cumulative effect of impacts over a single game or match.
It should be cheap and easily assembled by those operating at a secondary or high school level of technical skill.

We have created this Design Challenge so that Members of The element14 Community can create inventions intended to save lives.

The challenge will begin recruitment on November 3, 2014; the closing date for recruitment date is November 24, 2014. Fifteen challengers will be selected and announced as soon as possible afterwards.

Challengers will have until Friday, March 27, 2015 to submit their completed submission.

Kits Provided

The kits to be provided to each of the challengers is as follows –

EVAL-ADXL362Z	A complete system for real-time evaluation of the ADXL362 micropower, 3-axis, digital-ouptut MEMS accelerometer.
EVAL-ADXL362Z-MLP	Real-time evaluation system: includes motherboard, satellite board, accelerometer, and all required cables.

Tektronix

The TBS1202B-EDU Oscilloscope will be provided to each of the competitors.

Electrolube

Each competitor will receive the following resins –

UR5562 - 2 part optically clear polyurethane resin
UR5041 - 2 part black polyurethane resin with excellent water resistance

Budget

Each competitor will receive a budget of $500 / €375 to purchase additional components.

Assessment

After the final submissions of the designs and code on March 27, 2014, the solutions will be assessed by Leeds Beckett University. The following criteria will be used in their analysis:

Accuracy: how well does the proposed solution register the information it is intended to assess?
Convenience: how easy it will be for non-technical personnel, such as coaches and trainers, to use the information? How easy is it to put together and download the software?
Cost: how much will it cost for a school or sports club to install the solution in their equipment? Is it cost effective?
Durability: for example, can it withstand multiple impacts and yet continue to function normally?

The solution which meets these four criteria the best will be the winner; in the case that if further improvements are yet required for it to be used in real life scenarios, we will may work with the winning engineer to develop it to fruition.

We intend for Leeds Beckett University to blog about the progress of testing on element14. This will establish the transparent criteria that are being used in judging the solutions, furthermore, it will keep the engineers informed while they await the results.

Sudden Impact: Winners Announced!

The decision for our grand prize winner was not an easy one to make after considering the results from Leeds Beckett University and a detailed review of the complete content for each project.

The Sudden Impact Grand Prize Winner is Cosmin Iorga!

Cosmin's winning build features a main helmet unit that measures head impact, body temperature, tilt, global positioning and even brain activity. A separate electrocardiogram chest module measures heart rate and both units provide data and alerts to an Android smartphone app. I had the opportunity to chat with Cosmin and discuss the challenge and his reaction to finding out he won.

element14: What was your reaction to winning?

Cosmin: I felt great; it was a mixture of intense happiness, satisfaction, and gratitude, immediately followed by an energy suddenly released, the energy that has been building up gradually for the past weeks while following the project testing updates from Leeds Becket University.

element14: What part would you consider the most fun of the project?

Cosmin: Probably the most fun part of the project was the exploration of what each of the received Analog Devices modules and sensors can do, the experimental work on connecting and controlling them to make them functional, and the thinking on how to use these modules and sensors in a creative way in my project.

element14: What was the most challenging?

Cosmin: Definitely there were a lot more challenging than fun moments in working on this project. I would like to mention as challenging the interpretation of accelerometer measurements recorded during a sudden impact. At the beginning the x,y, and z axis values were all over the place and did not make much sense. Then I post-processed them in spreadsheets and I went through an intuitive analysis of what happens in an impact and how to relate what happens to the measured acceleration. An important fact that I realized was that the mechanical properties of the human body part that receives the impact has a significant effect on the damage produced by the impact and on the acceleration values that are measured. My analysis had to go back to refreshing my knowledge about collision theory and balance between elastic and inelastic collisions. After that, things started to make sense and I could explain what I saw through a dynamic interrelation between action and reaction force pairs.

I would also like to mention another challenge or maybe I better would say "stressful situation". Part of my project initialization was to setup the communication between a smartphone and the TK102 tracker that I modified into a GSM modem. In order to enable this communication the phone number of the smartphone has to be added into the GSM modem as an authorized number. This is done through sending a sequence of commands in the format of SMS text messages from an already authorized smartphone. So here I am in California trying to remotely program the GSM modem on my project to authorize the smartphone number received from Professor Reinhold Behringer that was planned to be used at Leeds Beckett University in United Kingdom for testing my project. At that moment I realized that my project has learned my phone number without the U.S. country code, which worked well here in U.S. but not in U.K. The GSM modem received my SMS text commands from my phone number with the U.S. country code appended, and did not want to recognize my number anymore. I felt lost, but then I remembered that the first phone number authorized in that GSM modem was entered with the country code (my wife's phone number), so I picked up that phone and I was happy and relieved to see that it was recognized by the GSM modem and I could add the new authorized number. The stress has dissipated for a few moments but it came back when I realized that I did not add a zero in front of the number, as I read on the Internet that it is placed when dialing local numbers in U.K. So I tried to add the number as a different authorized number this time with a leading zero in front, but to my surprise I was no longer able to communicate with the GSM modem. The reason was that the GSM modem can store only five numbers as authorized numbers, and the newly added number received from Professor Reinhold Behringer "pushed" out of memory my wife’s phone number, and that was the only number added with U.S. country code. At that moment I felt like I lost contact with a space rover on Mars or another planet. But luckily, as I then learned from Professor Reinhold Behringer, the first number without the leading zero worked well, and they were able to establish communication with the GSM modem and receive data from my project.

element14: What other builds did you follow along with in the challenge?

Cosmin: I followed from the begging all the updates posted by the challenge participants. I liked the quality of blog posts and the detailed descriptions of various issues and accomplishments, and I particularly liked to read what Doug and Ravi have posted.

element14: What advice would you give to other members who are doing, or thinking of doing a design challenge?

Cosmin: My advice to current and future challenge participants is to be confident on themselves, to approach the challenge with an "out of the box" creative thinking, and to do all the best they can to create strong projects.

Ravi Butani of India!

Ravi built a real-time player monitoring system. He will be receiving a CEL-Robox 3D printerCEL-Robox 3D printer.

In November of 2014 the element14 Community challenged 12 members to help develop a low cost, wearable device to help monitor measure and alert the user of the potential dangers associated with athletics. The Kit each Challenger received included components from Analog Devices, a Tektronix oscilloscope, advanced polymers from Electrolube and a $500 budget from Premier Farnell for additional parts and purchases.

Upon the completion of their projects the challengers shipped their projects to Leeds Beckett University in the UK to have their build tested in a laboratory environment. This was the first time project submissions from an element14 Design Challenge were sent out for third-party testing.

Element14 would like to say “thank you” to Professor Reinhold Behringer and his team at Leeds Beckett University for their evaluation. Attached you will find the criteria for the evaluation and scoring methodology. There is also a scoring sheet of the six challengers who submitted their final project for testing.The other Sudden Impact projects were:

a real-time coach and athlete monitoring system from Austin Horning in the U.S.;
a sudden impact helmet and uniform sensor system by Dragan Knezevic in Serbia;
a helmet-mounted ski monitor from Hendrik Lipka in Germany;
a helmet-mounted trauma monitor and heart reactor by Douglas Wong in Canada.

All of the Challengers who submitted their projects for testing will be receiving a Withings Plus Sports Watch as a thank you.

For the first time in element14.com Design Challenge history, we have all of the completed projects from our Challengers in one place.

The following Challengers have boxed up in bubble wrap their precious projects and sent them to Leeds-Beckett University in Leeds, UK.

Tomorrow we’re sending a video crew out to meet with Reinhold Behringer (rbehringer) , Professor of Creative Technology, LBU School of Computing where they will video tape the unboxing of all the projects. Stay tuned to this Design Challenge for more updates as they become available.
