&lt;p&gt;In the old days (1970s) FM tuners used rotary variable capacitors and a remote user tuning knob. The two were joined by a non stretch thin cord kept in tension by a coil spring. If the cord slipped you could wind it round the drive of capacitor shafts more than once.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The goal of a nicely set up drive was that you could span the full FM radio range by giving the control known a single flick so that its inertia would drive the capacitor all the way round.&lt;/p&gt;
