If you don't get chance to implement the GPS side of the project, you could "predict" where the container is by tracking the ship itself. All of these container ships can be tracked e.g. via this website, so once you've scanned the container onto the ship, you could use the vessel ID to "track" the "container" until it gets scanned off the ship. You can use an API to easily access the vessel geo location and publish that data to your web dashboard.

I like the idea.

Too bad you can't use a GPS type receiver to collect position data during the package movement.

You could use and IMU, but it will not be very accurate without occasional know position fixes during transfer.

How do you get the NFC smart tag scanned whilst in transit ?

The Green Envy Racing team use a DIY tracking device based on a RockBLOCK Iridium GPS modem to track their shipping container.
