Comments such as what are being shared on this blog entry are one of the great assets of Element 14! I love how the various experience and knowledge from other members can be shared and a project can drastically improve due to this input. Working on a project in a closed environment doesn't allow for any assistance to be provided until after the project is "done" and misses the great window of opportunity for improvement and advancement!

I will study on ATEX and see how I can apply it to my project. Hence, they are expensive I will explain the what I learn but I will implement the maker types sensors. It looks like the size of the approved sensors makes it difficult to design on the helmet but I will search on it.

Th methane sensor you have chosen is not suitable for use underground. It has a 1W heater element which means it is as likely to cause an explosion as to prevent one (without precautions which are not viable for a helmet mounted system.)

You can buy low power methane sensors which are much more suitable.

There are published rules (and they are very demanding) governing the use of electrical and electronic systems in explosive atmospheres (which includes mines) - you should read up on them before designing your electronics.

You won't be able to design and build a certifiable system on the budget and timescale available to you but you should be able to at least aim in the right direction.

Google "explosive atmosphere regulations" to get started on finding out about the problems and regulations.

Interesting, I like the idea of the helmet being key to gaining entrance to work site. No safety, no access. :-)
