Leaving the 7490s in situ would be a less general soln. With that set-up you can do decimal, with a slight mod bi-quinary. Using the more i/o intensive scheme would allow you to do custom stuff such as, maybe, hexadecimal.

DON'T DAMAGE IT!

All the hard work has been done and dusted.

Instead drive it using its standard inputs to display what you want; presumably decimal digits.

Looks like a great place to start.

Having the chips on sockets enables you to do a lot of easy circuit modification.

Well done Gerrit.

First off the block with your intro.

When I saw the application, my first thought is how does someone know what the numbers represent ... they are numbers.

I'm sure as you progress that will be sorted.

Drawback is that each time you change a digit you will have some counting effect on it.

I suspect there is a blanking line somewhere that you can manipulate.

I like this challenge idea. Does it make sound when the pulses are received? I think it would be cool to use keep the chips in place and send pulses to change the digits, then you would only need 6 output pins or 12 if need to reset. The Edison would keep track of where stuff is and reset/pulse to get where it has to go. Would be a cool effect if the timing was at the right speed. I picture the 24 clock on the show 24 and if it would be making that sound they use in the show, that would be grand.
