This looks like a fun project, there's lots of cool stuff you can get from a CD drive.

Very wise on the high voltage arcs, if you are not familiar with the technology then it's best to play it safe. Here's an example of a "jacob's ladder" using EL cables. EL Ladder | DigitalMisery.com

I'm also planning to use a USB audio card, I've got a really cheap one, will let you know how I get on with it once the Edison arrives.
