Hello COMPACT,

I knew you were just like me and can't leave the new technology alone. :) It is too fascinating to be playing with the newest technology out there and Love it because I am constantly keeping my prototype designs open for expansion and adaptability for the new technogy. I have almost completed the new board but like you stated that isn't the scope of this competition. I will post it but there is no way to actually have the new board developed and properly tested before Nov 30:) I just know that our products have to go to this 90% efficient design instead of our 90% minus 10-20% efficient designs for the discrete chargers.

The four output pins I will be tying together.

I will not have a adapter input but only allow wirelesscharging or power from the battery. I am still using a buck boost to give us the 5.0V we need for these devices!

Hi Chad,

I've got a copy of both documents and the Schematic on the EVM user's guide and at a passing glance many things don't yet match up.

Amongst the mismatches, the product brief shows the bq51050B having BATT pin. The EVM shows that it has 4 OUT pins.

What I'm about to say might be wrong. but here goes anyway.

I've noted that the bq51050B outputs 4.2V @1A (max) on J3 whereas on bq51013A it outputs 5V @ 1A (max)

The output goes from Pre-Charge mode (200mA) to Fast-Charge mode (1000mA) depending upon the state of the Battery.

Charging will terminate (i.e. Wireless power stops) when battery has reached 4.2V.

I can't see any DPPM (Dynamic Power Path Management) apart from the External Adapter (Non-wireless) input.

I don't know what ramifications this has to any permanently connected downstream devices.

I'll look into this in more detail later and for the time being I'll concentrate on completing my project.

Hello COMPACT,

No I just have the information off of the website! But you can gather a lot of information and even place in in a schematic and PCB without the data sheet for now. It is the same 20QFN package and basically same layout but I will for sure wait as well for the data sheet before I order my new boards. But I am right now developing off of the eval board BQ51050BEVM-764 for a side project and to reduce the footprint and increase the Efficiency of my boards significantly! This gives me enough to work off of to be able to see what has changed and what I need to get rid of!

Chad,

The datasheet link on your blog and TI's website only pulls up a Product Brief.

Did you request a copy of the Datasheet from TI and have additional information on this new IC?

So far, the competition has been a true benefit for me.

I was not sure how far the wireless power technology had gotten, so you have all greatly increased both my knowledge and my interest.

I agree with Chad, if he has the time to make the mods, then he helps show us the way.

Face it, we are all winners in the competition when we learn new things.
