The two bqTESLA™ circuits give smartphone users a simpler, stress-free charging experience and help designers implement wireless power technology in more places, such as automotive consoles, charging pads and office furniture. For samples and bqTESLA development kits, visit: www.ti.com/wirelesspower-pr.

TI’s bq51050B is the industry’s first Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) 1.1 Qi-compliant wireless power receiver with integrated direct battery charger, and enables faster, more efficient charging of smartphones, wireless keyboards and other portable electronics. The unique 20-V receiver combines rectification, voltage conditioning, communication control and Li-Ion charging capability in a single, tiny integrated circuit, – eliminating the need for a separate battery charger circuit. The inductor-free, single-stage design delivers the industry’s highest system efficiency and saves up to 60-percent board space compared to a multi-stage implementation.

In addition to the receiver, TI’s bq500410A is the first WPC 1.1-ready wireless power transfer controller to support A6 transmitters. The controller allows a Qi-compliant smartphone or other portable device to charge in a surface area of at least 70 mm by 20 mm, 400-percent larger compared to today’s 18-mm by 18-mm “bull’s-eye” charge space. The bq500410A achieves greater than 70-percent efficiency, and relies on a unique parasitic metal and foreign object detection feature to safely protect the system and stop delivering power if a metal object is detected between the transmitter and receiver.

Making wireless power a reality

Wireless power is an emerging technology that creates a better charging experience for consumers, just as Wi-Fi replaced the need to use an Ethernet cable for Internet connectivity. TI’s advanced receiver and transmitter integrated circuits, design tools and resources are making wireless power a reality. TI has current solutions that support Qi-compliant devices, and will expand its portfolio to support future, viable technologies. As the leading provider of power management ICs, including battery management and power supply technology, TI relies on power design expertise to drive innovations in wireless charging.

www.ti.com/wirelesspower-pr

Guidelines for Automotive Aftermarket Chargers

The Wireless Power Consortium has developed guidelines to assist developers of wireless chargers for the automotive aftermarket, the Guidelines for Automotive Aftermarket Chargers. These guidelines will help you make attractive Qi automotive chargers that deliver the promise of Qi. These guidelines apply to low power (5 watts or less) aftermarket automotive wireless powered transmitters and address safety, emissions, and vehicle interface. Qi-certified products that meet all requirements in these guidelines may claim: “Meets Qi Automotive Aftermarket Guidelines”. Qi-certified products don't have to comply with these guidelines but to make the above claim, a product must be Qi-certified and must comply with these guidelines. Compliance testing to these guidelines can be self-evaluated (no third party audit required). Automotive OEM products may also meet these guidelines but the individual OEM requirements will often exceed the requirements in these guidelines. source http://www.wirelesspowerconsortium.com/developers/guidelines-for-automotive-aftermarket-chargers.html

Transistor use also allowed "instant-on" operation because there were no filaments to heat up.

As to mobility, the typical portable tube radio of the 1950s was about the size and weight of a lunchbox, and was powered by several heavy, non-rechargeable batteries. A transistor radio could fit in a pocket, weighed half a pound, and was powered by a single compact 9-volt battery. (See TI photo to right)

With these pros in mind, TI’s then Executive Vice President Pat Haggerty “decided that the electronics industry needed a transistor wake-up call and that a small radio would provide it,” according to TI’s Web site.

Haggerty decided TI would develop the transistor radio business and the company’s semiconductor products division took on the challenge of developing a method for mass-producing germanium transistors.

In the spring of 1954 and with a prototype in hand, TI searched out an established radio manufacturer to develop and market a radio using its transistors. TI soon partnered with the Regency Division of Industrial Development Engineering Associates (IDEA). The new transistor radio would be introduced in New York and Los Angeles by mid-October to take advantage of holiday sales.

The 5 x 3 x 1 ¼-inch radio used four TI transistors and a TI subminiature output transformer, according to this TI press release issued on October 18, 1954. http://www.ti.com/corp/docs/company/history/timeline/semicon/1950/docs/54regency-vignette.htm

When it was released weeks later, the Regency TR-1 cost $49.95. Although its price was high in terms of 1950s dollars, more than 100,000 of the pocket radios were sold over time.

The transistor radio remains one of the most popular communications devices. Some estimates suggest that there are more than seven billion of transistor radios in existence.

Source: http://www.edn.com/electronics-blogs/edn-moments/4398895/TI-announces-1st-transistor-radio--October-18--1954

By Upal Sengupta and Bill Johns, Texas Instruments

Wireless power systems are emerging as a practical option for conveniently recharging mobile phones and other handheld devices. Implementing an industry standard interface allows a common charging pad (TX) to recharge multiple types of battery-operated devices (RX). The WPC developed the Qi standard for wireless power systems with up to 5W of output power. This allows complete interoperability between transmitters and receivers independent of device manufacturer. This standard defines the means of implementing a number of functions that enhance the utility and efficiency of a wireless power system, for example:

The charging pad does not consume significant amounts of standby power when idle (no device placed on the pad).

The TX can detect the presence of an object placed on the pad, and further determine that it is a valid, Qi-compliant RX device.

Once an object is placed on the charging pad, the transmitter can output a variable power level based on the TX’s requirements.

The RX unit communicates its power needs back to the TX unit over the same magnetic coupling used for power transmission. Read More Here

Previously, any company that sold a wireless-power receiver also had to sell a corresponding transmitter. This hinders the market adoption of wireless power, and eventually leads to a proliferation of different, incompatible wireless power technologies. To address the problem, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) came up with Qi (pronounced “chee”)—the first global standard that enables interoperability between compliant transmitters and receivers at power levels up to 5 W.1 The Qi standard, introduced in July 2010, defines the operating frequency, operating voltages, and basic coil configurations for a wireless-power system. In addition, a communication protocol is defined whereby a receiver can communicate information to a transmitter, such as when the transmitter should terminate power (i.e., enter a power-saving mode when the phone is no longer charging), how much power the receiver requires, and whether output power should be increased or decreased. The end result is that accessory products now can offer wireless power for a mobile device without the need for a basestation (wireless power transmitter). A common approach is to offer a sleeve, back door, battery pack, or holster that contains the receiver coil and electronics in the accessory product. Continue Reading Here

The Work Plan

The Wireless Power Consortium is committed to improve and extend the Qi wireless power specifications.

source http://www.wirelesspowerconsortium.com/developers/the-wpc-work-plan.html

Further increase in design freedom for wireless power products

The current version of the Qi low power specifications allows a range of possible transmitter designs. The first version of the specification allowed four types of transmitters. Two multi-coil arrays, a moving coil, and fxed single coil transmitters. And each type allows different shapes and sizes where manufacturers can make their own trade off between cost, user experience, and design. We are now further increasing the freedom in transmitter design. Members of the consortium have proposed several new transmitter types. These new types are added to the specification when analysis has shown that the new transmitter will not cause incompatibilities with the existing Qi power receivers. We will continue to add new transmitter types. For details see: http://www.wirelesspowerconsortium.com/blog/15/compatibility-or-freedom. Here you can read how we make sure that new transmitters will not cause incompatibilities.

Extension to 10-15 Watt

The Qi low power specification now guarantees the delivery of 5 Watt into Qi receivers. We are creating a certification program for Qi transmitters that can deliver uo to 15 Watt. These Qi transmitters provide rapid phone charging.

Extension to medium power

The Wireless Power Consortium has started work to extend the Qi specification to medium power. The low power specification delivers up to 5 Watt, the medium power specification will deliver up to 120 Watt.

Wireless Power in Kitchens

Cable- and connector-free appliances make kitchens safer, more convenient, and provide a whole new way of working with appliances. These applances need significant power to drive motors and cook food. Wireless kitchenm power will deliver up to 2 kW.

BY STEPHEN TERRY, SUDHA CHIRRA, and TONY ANTONACCI
Texas Instruments, Dallas, TX

As power requirements for portable devices increase, consumers are looking for easy-to-use charging solutions that can be deployed in a wide array of environments such as home, office, automobiles, airports, schools and more. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has created the industry’s first interoperable standard (Qi) that allows any compliant transmitter to power compliant receivers of varying power requirements from various vendors. Advances in technology enable portable equipment to become smarter with every generation of products. The increasing user friendliness and features of these devices puts a demand on the power requirements. As a result, consumers find themselves charging their battery-powered applications more often and are looking for more convenient and efficient ways to recharge their devices. Wireless power technology provides a solution by allowing a portable device to charge from a transmitter pad without the need for any electrical connections. Today, many forms of wireless power technology are in development, but the most successful implementations for commercial applications are based on inductive-based power transfer, for example, the electric toothbrush. This technology is more readily adapted to a wide range of commercial applications – hence, allowing for an interoperable infrastructure. Continue Reading Here
