Update: I got a response from TI, stating that the ICs are expected to be back in stock in 1.5 weeks. I also got a quote from the Jotrin, the Alibaba vendor suggested by Malcom. It's 9$ per chip, with 25$ express shipping.

I think I'm going to wait for the TI samples and may finish the assembly just in time.

Currently the TI page tells me that Arrow should have some in stock (just click on the 'Buy from distributor' link, then it tells you which one has stock). Unfortunately they too have a minimum quantity of 250: BQ500212ARGZT - Texas Instruments, Power Supply Controllers and Monitors. Order from Arrow Electronics. Maybe you can ask them what lower quantities would cost?

Did you try to order the samples with TI? They should tell you somewhere in the process when they would be shipped...

Never really ordered from them so I cannot say with certainty what and when you will get.
