What got you started in electronics?

I started out by custom painting Gamecubes actually. I started installing LEDs and then modchips, and the hobby progressed from there. I did that for a while before I decided to try to make a Gamecube Portable. It was an intimidating project, but I took my time and worked on it one piece at a time until it was finished. I loved working on that so much that I decided to make another portable that would fix my complaints about the first one. I stumbled across Bitbuilt and ended up making a Wii Portable that is much smaller and more durable than the GCP. I learn new things every day from the users there.

My favorite projects are portables and custom controllers. I do a lot of custom controllers because they use a lot of the same skills that portables do, but is a smaller project overall. I still enjoy customizing consoles, but recently I've been working more on the technical side of projects rather than cosmetic. Right now I am working on a setup of tiny Gamecube controllers for a display at MGC as well as my project for this contest.

Do you tend to do more electronics modding, case modding, or about even with the two?

I'd say about even of the two. I like projects that involve both soldering and casework, because the results end up being much nicer than just one or the other. It's also more fun to work on because when one part starts to get tedious, you can switch to the other part.

Have you done any non-video game electronics or building projects?

My projects are almost all video game related, but I did build a 7" battery powered screen that I use for testing other projects. It supplies 5v through a USB so I can use it to power almost anything I make, and it has composite and audio inputs for testing video, and a built in infrared sensor bar for any wii related projects I might be working on. It can also double as a phone charger or tiny tv.

That said, I have fixed a variety of electronic devices, and competed in FIRST robotics in high school so I do have background in other electronics. My main focus is definitely video game related however since I enjoy working with them so much.

What are your favorite video games and consoles? (For playing or for hacking)

My favorite games are Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, Tomb Raider (2013), and Portal 2. My favorite console to play on is Gamecube, but the Wii is by far my favorite to work with in terms of hacking and projects. Not only can it play games from a variety of consoles, but the motherboard can be trimmed to the size of a Gameboy Color cartridge and still maintain full functionality. It's extremely well designed and built.
