A community member is interested in taking an old Simon game and turning it into a musical instrument with an added button for a fifth note. He could then add an audio out to connect to a PC, where he can mix it like a musical instrument. Ben gives some suggestions on what he could do and this also gives him ideas for a future episode.

zip wants to know if it’s possible to modify a Simon game into a musical instrument. He’s heard that the game’s sound was inspired by a bugle. It has a total of five notes, one for each button and one that sounds when you make a mistake. To access the fifth note, he’s guessing that it needs to add a button to access the fifth note. Additionally, he’d like to add a headphone jack as an audio out so that can record the audio to PC for mixing. He’s curious to know if you can get extra sounds or increased functionality from the Simon game. You can hit two buttons at a time to get another note, giving you 16 notes, but the question is whether you can hack a Simon to turn it into a musical instrument.

lanmanmd wonders if you're using all the pins on your Raspberry Pi, all the GPIO, if it can still be considered a Raspberry Pi. He's interested in finding another way to go from the SDI header to low differential signaling (LVDS) or other display types found in old laptops. As it turns out, Texas Instruments makes an inexpensive converter chip that does just this. You can get this TTL to LVDS converter chip from TI and it will allow you to go from the Raspberry Pi to the chip and then directly to a piece of LCD glass like you would find in a laptop screen.

robertmcgoniglejr wants to know if it's possible to add a PCI express lane to a Raspberry Pi for adding a GPU. According to Ben it's probably not. PCI Express Lanes are differential signals, a modern x86 computer, has quite a few of them and that's what's used to add video cards. There are a few exposed differential signal lines such as for the LCD and the HDMI but he doesn't think that's going to give you the same kind of access you'd have with PCI Express because you're basically talking about a completely different architecture.

d3angc has portable DVD players mounted to the head rests of his vehicles and wants to upcycle them using a Raspberry Pi 3. He's planning on removing the DVD guts and replacing it with a Raspberry Pi 3 with Kodi installed. He’s designing this with kids in mind so he’s also planning to add the necessary module for wireless game controllers. He wants to know if Ben is interested in doing the build if he sends him one of the sets he has.

According to Ben, the problem you would have here is you’d have to know what the signals are on the DVD player screen. If it was TTL NOT LVDS you could put the Raspberry Pi into TTL RGB video mode. It will use the first 27 pins. It does 8 bit RGB, that’s 24 pins, and the other pins are hsync, vsync, and then dot clock. If you had an LCD that had those signals you could put the Raspberry Pi into TTL RGB mode and then as long as you had the timing correct you could directly drive an LCD with it. The 4:3 screen from the Hex Game is basically the same screen that’s on the PlayStation portable.

It’s a 24-bit RGB screen so that could be something you hooked up directly to a Raspberry Pi. You’d have to make your own device tree overlay for it to work. For the system boot up you’d have to tell it not to use HDMI or video and instead use these pins in this mode. With most Raspberry Pi’s it would eat up most of the IO but you’d have the USB ports to use with the controllers.

To find out if your old portable DVD player screen is compatible with the Raspberry Pi , you’d have to look at the ribbon cable coming from the screen, it would probably have 40 connections on it, 24 of which would be the data, three to five of which would be the sync signals, and the rest would probably just be power, ground, hot plug detect, and things like that. A lot of those screens require 21 volts DC for the backlight so you’d probably have to have some sort of boost converter for the voltage.

The 24-bit parallel RGB interface allows parallel RGB displays to be attached tio the Raspberry Pi GPIO either in RGB24 (8 bits for red, green and blue) or RGB666 (6 bits per color) or RGB565 (5 bits red, 6 green, and 5 blue). The interface is controlled by the GPU firmware and can be programmed through special config.txt parameters and enabling the correct Linux Device Tree overlay.

GPIO Pins

The DPI (Display Parallel Interface) is a simple clocked parallel interface (up to 8 bits of R, G, B; clock, enable, hsync, and vsync). Its one of the alternate functions selectable on bank 0 of the Raspberry Pi GPIO. The interface is available as alternate function 2 (ALT2).

There are various ways that color values can be presented on the DPI output pins in either 565, 666, or 24-bit modes:

Disable Other GPIO Peripherals

You'll need to disable all other peripheral overlays that use conflicting GPIO pins by commenting out or inverting any dtparams that enable I2C or SPI in the config.txt file:

dtparam=i2c_arm=off
dtparam=spi=off

Linux Device Tree Overlay

The Linux Device Tree overlay is used to switch the GPIO pins into the correct mode (alt function 2). The GPU is responsible for driving the DPI display. There is no linux driver so the overlay simply sets the GPIO alt functions correctly.

The 'full fat' DPI overlay (dpi24.dtb) sets all 28 GPIOs to ALT2 mode to provide the full 24 bits of color bus as well as the h and v-sync, enable and dot clock. This will use all the bank 0 GPIO pins.

Users can edit overlays to create a custom overlay to enable just the pins they want to use.

wxam would like to make a portable Raspberry Pi. He wants to know if he found an unused LCD screen from an ASUS tablet and wants to know if he'll need to buy something in order to allow his ASUS tablet LCD screen to work with his Raspberry Pi. LVDS stands for low differential signalling, which is the kind of thing you would find on a USB connection or HDMI. Basically, it's using a fewer number of wires to transmit a lot of data quickly in a serial manner using differential signalling. One signal is either higher or lower than the other in voltage and then they switch places in their voltage. Instead of going from 0 to 3 volts, 0 to 5 volts, or even 0 to 1.8 volts, their change is around .5 volts which means they can change faster allowing you to transfer data faster.

Ben's got something on his table that might be of some use to wxam. It's a board that attaches to a Raspberry Pi. It uses all the GPIO. The reason it does that, there's a mode you can load up in Raspberry Pi, its in the device config or device tree overlay, and it turns the GPIO into a TTL Level RGB LCD Driver. So, if you had an LCD screen that had RGB TTL Levels, such as Playstation Portable screen, you could hook that up here and then set up the parameters in your config file and a Raspberry Pi would boot into it. If you're talking about an LVDS, you'll probably want to get a TI DS90C365AMT/NOPBTI DS90C365AMT/NOPB, a programmable LVDS transmitter 18 bit flat panel display link. What this chip does is take in your RGB TTL Signals (red, green, blue, sync, vsync, dot enabled, dot clock) and it encodes those into a 4 channel LVDS signal that can be sent to an LCD panel. This is something you might want to look into if you want to have low-level controls of LCDs without having to use the HDMI interface of the Raspberry Pi. It's a surface mount chip so if you were to sue this you could probably get one of those breakout board adapters, solder the chip to it, and solder it into your Raspbery Pi.

Ben would like to do an episode in the future where they discuss device tree overlays and how to configure you Raspberry Pi to work with other LCDs. A similar question was asked in Community Feedback 07: Raspberry Pi Hacks when Ben touched on putting Raspberry Pi into TTL RGB mode. If you had an LCD that had those signals you could put the Raspberry Pi into TTL RGB mode and then as long as you had the timing correct you could directly drive an LCD with it. The 4:3 screen from the Hex Game is basically the same screen that’s on the PlayStation portable.

ryanthornburg wants to know if it's possible to run the programming without the GUI, using command line. The program that Felix used to do the programming was called Kdevelop, part of the KDE suite, it’s a GUI type application, however, it’s a plain text editor so all the code is plain text. So, there are text editors that run in the terminal such as vi, vim, emacs, and nano. You can use one of those and then once you’re done editing the code, just compile it from the terminal.

Karen wants to know if she can add code onto her Arduino by taking her .ino file outside of loading up the Arduino IDE and pushing it to the Arduino. She wants to know if there’s a way to take the .ino file and push it to the Arduino through Terminal. The way Felix did it in the episode, is he wrote a script, which you can write in a plain text editor within the terminal, and then execute the script. Or you could take the main line, the one line that does all the work in that script, and take that line out of the script and type it directly into the terminal. It’ll then compile the .ino file, link it, and upload the program to the Arduino.

Ben and Karen discuss what it would take disable the wireless functionality in a mini keyboard, such as the ones typically paired with a Raspberry Pi, so that it can be integrated into your electronics projects. The reason you would want to disable the wireless functionality is to conserve battery consumption.

old_doc is interested in re-purposing a wireless keyboard and possibly hardwiring it to an electronics project. To help him, he's wondering if Ben is interested in doing a teardown and analysis of a similar mini keyboard. He sees a mini keyboard teardown as a solution for anyone interested in building handheld projects that also preserve battery through the removal of wireless functionality. old_doc wants to build a mini computer into the case of a first generation Nintendo DS. He wants to wire a mini keyboard to his ASUS tinkerkit as the final step.

Ben and Karen wired a similar keyboard inside the Raspberry Pi Photo Booth that they recently built. Ben recalls a project where he hacked up an Xbox 360 chat pad so that it attached to the game controller. The chat pad consisted of a Microchip Pic microcontroller and keyboard matrix so there was no wireless. It was incredibly simple, so he suggests that it might be possible to start out with something similar and build up from there. However, if you were to go that route, you'd be losing all the function keys, control-alt-delete, and stuff you need for a modern computer.

It's possible that they could do a teardown of a mini keyboard to see if they could remove the wireless functionality and make it as battery saving as possible. Or, they could hook up another microcontroller to it and just make their own keyboard. To determine which approach is best, they would need to first plug the keyboard into a board and check the battery consumption to see if it's still utilizing wireless or it it just switches over to USB power once its plugged in. If you could tap into the matrix of the keyboard then you could use the buttons and address them yourself using a microcontroller. That way you would know exactly what’s going on and not have to worry about using the wireless functionality. If the keyboard either uses a separate wireless module this could be a solution but if the microcontroller is the wireless module then you can’t disable one without destroying the other. If they were to do a teardown then they would need to take a couple of different modules to see what works.
