A winner has been chosen: but not yet replied with details! If they haven't replied in 3 weeks then another will be chosen!

What's your greatest gaming achievement?

Have you managed to get to the kill screen on Donkey Kong or Pacman ?

Perhaps you own the fastest speed run on VVVVVV ? Or do you currently hold the greatest score on ninja mode in Audiosurf ?

Perhaps you've taken part in an international DOTA 2 or League of Legends tournament ?
Or just managed to finish the seemingly impossible to some, Manic Miner.

Whatever the achievement, great or small I want to hear about it and what your favourite ZX Spectrum game was or still is. The one I consider to be the greatest or best in a weeks time will be chosen to win an amazing ZX Spectrum satchel/bag and gloriously made mug (don't enter, I want them for myself .... just kidding (maybe ;)).

Favour will be given to those people who post proof of their gaming achievement, maybe with a youtube or twitch.tv video; a screenshot or recording.

Remember, this is your gaming achievement. Not someone else's !

The best gaming achievement will win a ZX Spectrum mug and bag!

The element14 Team will choose an entry after the 8th of August when the competition closes

The winner will be sent a ZX Spectrum Bag and Mug. Entrants who post up to 10 words describing their project and post pictures/photographs/diagrams/schematics planning their project will be favoured to win the competition.

Timeline:

Super Glue Gun: The Final Countdown

We're in the final days of the Super Glue Gun build. There have been trials and tribulations throughout this build, but the end is upon us! We've been listening to your feedback and trying to incorporate some of your ideas into the design.When designing a product for retail, it is important to do market research to ensure you have an audience that will buy your product. It is also important that you don't just include features that you feel are useful, but that you listen to your audience and include features that would make your product the best it can be, and one that will sell.

In listening to our audience, one thing we've noticed is a major split in what people think the super glue gun should be. Should the super glue gun be for people that want a heavy duty glue gun that can extrude large amounts of glue faster? OR should the super glue gun be a tool for intricacy, allowing you to get into small areas and extrude glue in fine detail? Should it be more like a caulk gun or 3Doodler for hot glue? Down the road, both products could be made. With more development time, it could even be possible to make one gun that serves both purposes. Given the small size of our design team and time limitations for development, we are only able to develop one of those.

Which Iconic but Obsolete Gadget Would You Upcycle to Relive Your Past?

The Ben Heck Team recently upcycled an old 80s boombox using an Intel Edison kit for Arduino. The "boombox" or "ghetto blaster" is an iconic product that rose in popularity through the late 70s and into the late 80s. Back before people were slaves to smartphone screens, before they were blissfully oblivious to the world around them with noise canceling headphones, you could find young inner city kids lugging around portable cassette decks with big speakers on their shoulders, and kids in the suburbs attempting to keep up with them.

In the 1980s and 1990s, 'Boomboxes' were very popular. The sight of a person carrying a huge music player on their shoulder was iconic, until the Walkman came along. The team decided it's time for a retro-fit, using the intel Edison, with thanks to its Arduino compatible breakout board, and a USB soundcard it's time to make the Boombox smarter while keeping with its original parts.

The Boombox may have introduced the idea of portable music to the masses but it wasn't until the Walkman was introduced in the late 70s that you had your first truly portable music device. The Walkman allowed you to play your music as loud as you wanted without being a nuisance thanks to the included headphones. Those headphones were eventually shrunk down in size to earbuds and when the iPod was released in the early 2000s it became possible for most people to carry their entire music collection with them at all times!

Some gadgets are so ubiquitous, for a period of time, its hard to imagine a world in which they never existed. The Walkman was one of those products, so was the iPod classic, a product so perfect, at the time you wondered how people ever lived without them. (The phone will never replace an ipod no matter what anyone says) Throwing on headphones, letting the music take over as the world slips away, and listening as long as you wanted without dealing with intrusive reminders about the world around you. You know... notifications, messages, phone calls and reminders!

There are certain gadgets that remind you of a happiness lost in the bustle of technological progress. Progress has a price but you can relive the past by upcycling your favorite obsolete products with an Intel Edison Kit for Arduino and joining the element14 Upcycle It Design Challenge on January 31st!

What Prototype Would You Like to See as a Commercially Available Product?

If you're a regular viewer of The Ben Heck Show then you know a new episode is released every week. What you might not realize is that a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to ensure tight schedules and deadlines are met. If you're working on a project over a longer period of time you have more time to make adjustments. More time means a much more robust design and detailed build.

With this in mind, the Team decided to take a look back at previous builds, select a few of their favorites and build them again from the ground up with a particular focus on and intent to actually bring them to market! We’d like your help in selecting our third long-term build. See the list below, make your choice and let us know why. We’ll start on these projects soon and see which one we can take the furthest!
