In this application-based episode, Derek shows how to build a sensor which measures linear motion using mutual inductance. He shows how an LVDT or linear variable displacement transducer works and how it is wound around an air-core. He also designs a differential detector circuit using a precision op-amp. He also provides two LTspice simulations, which show the drawbacks of using a simple diode vs. a precision rectifier so you can try it out on your own.
