Episode 549: Using a Teletype Machine as a USB Printer with Arduino

In a previous Episode Clem has mapped out the pinout for his 1960 Siemens S100 Teletype. Now it is time to decode its communication protocol and interface it with an Arduino to connect it over USB to a modern PC! 75Baud 5-Bit Baudot code is quite different to modern ASCII encoding. There are some bumps in the road like Baudrate calibration and recreating the Serial protocol in Arduino Code! What retro Tech would you like to revive?

  • You could possibly add a switch to the TTY to act as a synch pulse. You would then have the real frequency and could automaticaly adjust your timing in code. I'm imagining something as simply as a magnet on a shaft with a nearby Hall effect switch.

    yes, for that sort of feature a soution without moving parts would be best like you describe with a hall effect sensor. this also needs soem calibration to create the right timing for sync pulses, so I would not think of it as the easier solution compared to tuning it again every now and then.
    the main problem I see now is missing characters and how to replace them with combinations without messing up everything else or keeping combatibility with widely used Busses.
