Ever thought that kids get much better looking gadgets, or toys look more fun that their real versions? Me too! So we’re going to build a Lego camera into a fully working telephoto camera using a RaspberryPi and the High Quality Camera with 16mm telephoto lens.  Can I make a pretend camera into a real working camera that is actually worth using? Let's find out!

Supplemental Content:

  • GitHub link for the code, wiring guide and lego designs

Genial the idea of gluing the bricks together and then drill them. A good alternative to 3D printing

A nice project combining two great ideas. The Lego abuse with MEK (Kraggle) and Dremel was a bit painful though!

Good build and honest appraisal of the result.

As an engineer I would say you were functionally successful.

since the LEGO was bought for this purpose and you don't see a future version of yourself longing for that nostalgic feeling of when you got the kit for the first time... it's just awesome pink plastic to work with. LEGO will be AR in 5 years anyway and then you'll get all the kits to play with anyways ;D

Thanks, I was planning on trimming it down, but the length felt just right when I tried it. If it was for a kid then it might need to be lower for smaller hands

Thanks, I was between doing it this way, or 3D printing a lens holder "brick", however went with doing it this way as I felt I'd need to glue the rest of the camera together anyway, I didn't fancy picking up all the pieces from the floor whilst out of the house.

Thanks. I like to do random things just to see if it's possible, the projects that don't need to be done usually end up being much more fun to do!

Great job, I love the idea and implementation!  So many times you hear people saying that there is no reason to do/make this when what comes on our phone is so much better (or similar).  Where as you have shown that Makers need to Make!

I'm not usually a advocate of mixing kraggle and Lego, however this was an exception, as it really wouldn't have worked without it. I though the end result would be cool enough to make the sacrifice!
The only times I've previously used it was for similar reasons (making keyrings)

That's awesome! I did a different Raspberry Pi / camera project and my code was a tangled mess. I like your simplified version
