Unfortunately, not everything we buy off the shelf is as amazing as it appears. We found this with our Christmas Train. The options were throw it out, and mod it. I didn't really see that as a question...

There is so much in this project to love: trains, Raspberry Pi, retrofitting toys with superfluous electronics, and--most of all--that PlayStation Christmas jumper!

Also, remember the mantra: "It's okay;…

Nice upgrade.  I also really dislike the lurching forward on my cheap Christmas train.  My train uses 3 D cell batteries for power and weight.  It certainly doesn't leave a lot of room for electronics.  Maybe I could make something with an ATtiny and a touch sensor.  The stopping after so many loops is a super cool feature.  Great project.

There is definately scope for a much smaller controller, I'm just way more comfortable with Pi. I think a soft start with a delay is easily the best addition behind volume control!
