Augh! Why do I keep finding about these contests just before they are over? I've built so many things using 555 timers. I started using them shortly after Radio Shack started carrying them in the '70s.

I'm working on 555 timer-based temperature transmitter. The idea is to use the 555 in astable mode and replace one of the fixed resistors with a thermistor from the thermistors kit that I received as a part of the experimenting with thermistors challenge. The output frequency of the 555 will vary in accordance with the change in the thermistor resistance. I already tested it and it works. Now I'm stuck with the transmission of this frequency output. I'm looking at different ways that can transmit this output freq. of the 555 wirelessly. Planning to use a 433MHz RF module for the same. Not sure if it will work.

I did design a jumbo 555 PCB based on the block diagram of 555 functionality. Hopefully the parts will arrive in time for this project14.

Here is my entry: Let's find the fastest 555 and run it in astable mode to output a nice clock signal. And then I am a going to try everything to increase the output clock as much as possible, overclocking a 555 circuit. [emoticon:0e469978eb8947d18b9c41123db3725a] I want to see where the real limits are. And I am going to call the project: Ludicrous 555, when normal overclocking just isn't fast enough.

I have had during my bachelors study developed a 555 based IR transmitter, which I think required some 40kHz signals. So instead of using a whole MCU at that time, we designed a 555 based circuit....!!!

I really liked the improvements when they made CMOS versions - lower power, and they could actually generate a square wave.
