I can remember rejuvenating NiCad batteries with high current to burn shorting dendrites in the battery. This is a whole other technique I was not familiar with.

Nice project idea to help restore the cell plates.

In the ancient days of unsealed lead acid car batteries, batteries would be visually checked for suffient electrolyte solution in the cells. Often they just needed distilled water added. Hygrometers can also check specific gravity in case the battery needs some acid added.

In old batteries the plates may just be worn out from a life of charge/discharge cycles.
