You could maybe steal borrow the circuits from Adafruit and just design your PCB.

Yup - You're right. I got tangled in multiplying by two and dividing in half, and re-doubling again... or one of those...

We can hear up to around 20 kHz, but need to sample at twice that when recording as per Nyquist. And have to double that again for the second audio track...

This is awesome. It is somehow like the "opposite" of using XY mode on the scope to draw pictures to music.

I think that the 44kHz is more referring to stereo sound; so two independent channels each running at 22 kHz. Since your setup is mono, you would be comparing the 8 kHz sample rate against 22 kHz for CD.

The concepts seems good and you have a novel implementation which I will have to remember. I have used electret microphones and found them sensistive but only at shorter distances. I'm not expert but I'm sure there must be a way to get a longer range, after all, Alexa works well - inside anyway.

Yep - I have been CL-ocked.

I like the idea of doing something about it.

Some alternate actions might be to illuminate a bright LED or simply use the HID functionality to toggle CPS LOCK OFF whenever it goes on, so it is always off.
