Well the board is done. So time to mount the arm, decide if there will be a bezel between the puppet and board, work out springs for the arm weight and assemble him up

Still haven't had the combination of weather and time to finish the mounting board, as when it has been nice enough i've been stuck doing yardwork. Soon though, most of the yardwork is caught up!

Congratulations on your win and awesome project, [mention:cff82ed12b714001a1ba5205f2cb553c:e9ed411860ed4f2ba0265705b8793d05]-- I am so glad you did this with Circuit Python and got the Adafruit blog mention. I think Circuit Python has such a strong future that I'm pushing it in my mentoring sessions for others.

It is also clear that the next level of project wins on Element 14 will need a finished chassis/ cool look like you gave to Xut.

so outside of the fact that now it's trying to do the volume for every sample (which the servo can't respond that fast) I'm set to move back to the physical part of getting the the arm and other parts all mounted up

High in the list of things that make me want to take a sledgehammer to a raspberry pi...

I set up a fresh install.
Got the deprecated google library (vs sdk) working with a USB mic + headphone out to powered speakers
Partially due to advice here from another thread I decided to do incremental backups
Setup samba
Setup a share on my pc
Used rsync to copy all files to a folder on the pc
7zipped the folder with a relevant name

So this way I know I can restart from that working. Then I installed pulseaudo, verified everything was working and backed up again, zipping to a new file after it was done.

And then I installed the Waveshare WM8960 sound hat which is where the problem has begun before. The specific reason for that hat is that it has built in microphones (stereo) and a small built in amplifier plus it came with speakers for $20. that way it stays compact and doesn't need yet another power source in the moose.

Sooooo any guesses what happened? after a few pokes at the asound config, the damn thing is working fine, 100%. That's using the demo only program which is ok, but now I can at least clone the google samples that match that library version and hack in another voice for it as output. I may leave it as is, because looking at the raw data, not every stream back comes with text data. I'm still not sure why that is, when I ask what time it is, the assistant just answers - but the answer packet doesn't include it as text for some reason.

anyhow, this means that with this backed up, I can concentrate on the sound recording/monitoring part, to get the audio output volume / frequency and then run a servo based on that. Should be relatively easy, and now I can revert to this working on the hardware I wanted at any time even if I have to re-install

When I say almost working, i'm still getting an error. But this specific error is what you get on the base google samples as well when you don't specify a model id . So it seems to be reading the saved token fine, but when it makes the google api calls it fails. Not trying to be too melodramatic about it, but that is one of software development's hardest things to conquer. How long do you pursue following one route before moving on to another? I think that Agile development often makes this worse, as since you are incrementally adding functionality, it can often take longer before you realize that the path you went down is creating more difficulties. so now I wish I really would have started the pi end of this using an external powered speaker and USB mic. its sooooooooooooooooooooooo much easier to configure alexa, google assistant or whatever if there aren't multiple choices in terms of hardware. sigh

Going to check out this library today, seems handy as it includes both google assistant + alexa integration, using the alexa hotword detection to activate google
