Very often it happens to get indoors, lying on the floor to do abdominals or exercises for the legs or arms and, after having done a couple of them in the correct way, you start to do them a little too much ... hasty !!
In particular, using the motion sensors of the board I could monitor the quality of the exercises done by the user and if these are done incorrectly, it signals the user to repeat them.
For the classification of exercise carried out correctly, I would use artificial intelligence techniques, for example the help of Edge Impulse! I think a fun, useful and didactically interesting project could come out.

RE: Project14 | Better World With Arduino: Build Projects that Make a Positive Impact on the World!

I have several Arduino projects in the works, but due lack of availability of Arduinos like the Nano RP2040, I am forced to focus on a project that uses a plain old Nano. This project will be a complete sound synthesis system where the Nano is interfaced to a programmable sound generator (PSG) chip. The custom PCB I am designing for the system will include an audio amplifier as well as the PSG and Nano. It may not have an earth shattering positive impact on the planet, but everybody likes music and it is fun to experiment with sound synthesis and it uses an Arduino I can obtain.

RE: Project14 | Better World With Arduino: Build Projects that Make a Positive Impact on the World!

My proposal is that asset tracking for indoor application. The reason that I am thinking of this is because sometimes in university time, I tend to forget where I placed my food as it is in package and there is not so much space for storing, as some food like yogurt will turn bad if the environment is too damp. I would to find it in the indoor space ,make sure it will not expire without consumption and results in wastage.

By using its on board BHI260AP AI smart sensor with integrated IMU as it can use in pedestrian dead reckoning indoor and the BMP390 high performance barometric pressure sensor for detecting the small change in altitude. In addition, the BME688 AI sensor could be used for monitoring the humidity in the environment and informs me if it is rotten using the BME AI studio to train an AI model.

I will attach the board with the lithium battery to power it, and place it into the food that I would like to track on since I would like it to operate in low power and activate only when the food is rotten. I would like to test the performance of it and compare with the UWB application that done by other member project.

RE: Project14 | Better World With Arduino: Build Projects that Make a Positive Impact on the World!

“Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?”
― George Carlin

With spring and good weather more folks will hopefully be reducing their carbon footprint and getting exercise by traveling by bicycle.

A simple idea to make bicycling a more positive polite experience in both vehicle traffic and people traffic by adding a talking turn signal to the bicycle handlebars.

When approaching a bicycle from behind , pressing a button, the talking signal would simply say politely "coming up from behind" as a indication you are approaching.

A left button and right button in kind would flash the appropriate LED signal, and state "passing on the left" or "passing on the right" .

Yea, I can say those things once or twice nicely, but on a crowded Saturday, I get tired of repeating myself constantly. I also have a 90 dB siren on my bicycle, which really pisses people off when I come up from behind and blast their slow road hog butts with it. :-)

The turn signal could speak a grandmotherly voice as well, It could even have a button to say in passing "thank you, have a ducky day". Little things will make for a nicer world.

RE: Project14 | Better World With Arduino: Build Projects that Make a Positive Impact on the World!

I am working on cellular IoT development boards from Nordic and Blues wireless. I want to add the sensors capabilities from the Arduono Nano Nicla sense to the project.

I want to create a project which can help to reduce the soil extinction happening all around the world. The cellular based soil monitoring with sensors can help to analyse the soil. various factors which effect soil health can be monitored remotely. It can be used to analyse the effect of climate change on the health of soil. The data logged over the time can help scientist around the world to analyse the effects.

Sensors such as soil moisture levels, temperature, and soil organic contents can be used to study this. Nicla sense has some of this sensors as well as it has BLE connectivity to send data to nearby companion boards which eventually can send data on to the cloud platforms.

RE: Project14 | Better World With Arduino: Build Projects that Make a Positive Impact on the World!

Hi, I would like to submit a proposal for my project "Breathe" using the Arduino Nicla Sense ME board. My idea is to use this board with it's significant on-board processing power and inertial sensors to make a device capable of measuring breathing patterns from small movements of the chest or hip which can be used to infer emotional and focus state accurately (https://doi.org/10.1113/expphysiol.2008.042424). I have already tested this idea using a smartphone, but due to the chest placement, a smaller, and lower-powered device would be convenient. A device like this could be used to combat mental illness and improve productivity by ensuring people get the correct balance between work and relaxation or measure stress levels. The board will continuously record 5 mins of movement data which will be tagged by the user if a user feels a particular emotion. This will allow the device to continually retrain it's TinyML algorithms and monitor mood throughout the day. At the end of the day, the user will be able to see a breakdown of their emotional state and as such improve their mental wellbeing.

RE: Project14 | Better World With Arduino: Build Projects that Make a Positive Impact on the World!

I bought some bananas four days ago and I forgot to eat them. I didn't realize they were getting ripened with time by just looking at them. When I touched them that's when i knew that they are not edible any more. Now I am forced to think, how many fruits go to waste due to such negligence[emoticon:5ce50ea3f9eb49809e861e8733750338]? Maybe I would have eaten them if I had realized earlier that they getting over ripen or maybe I could even delay its ripening.

There is a gene in fruits that triggers ripening. When the fruits start to ripe they release ethylene gas. If this ethylene gas is removed, its ripening can be delayed. And we can even monitor the ripening stage of the fruit by measuring the amount of the ethylene gas.

So, my project consists of two parts: (1) Delaying ripening of the fruit and (2) Monitoring its ripening stage.

For this I can use the Nicla Sense ME board because it has the BME688 gas sensor which can measure the levels of VOC(volatile organic compounds) present in its environment.

First part of my project is to delay the ripening of the fruit. For this I will be measuring the amount of VOC (i.e. ethylene) present in the air and maintaining it below a certain limit by using a exhaust fan. The whole system will be inside a sealed container in which there will be a hole to get fresh air in and another hole to suck out the ethylene using the fan. The sense board will be continuously measuring the VOC levels inside the container. If the level rises above a threshold limit, then a signal will be sent to the exhaust fan which will suck out the air along with ethylene till the level again goes below the threshold.

The second part is to monitor the ripening stage of the fruit. For this I will be using ML. Each fruit has its particular ethylene vs time profile. It is basically a graph between amount of ethylene released vs time (or ripening stage). The Nicla Sense board will be continuously taking readings for VOC levels. After a certain number of readings, the readings will be compared against the already loaded ethylene profile and the ripening stage will be determined. There will be an LCD display which will show the ripening stage on it.

A switch will be used to toggle between the first and the second part of the project.

I think it will make a positive impact on the world in the way that if we are aware of the quality of the fruits, we will eat those fruits first which are going to overripe soon. This way fruits will not get wasted. I am planning to use banana for this project as it releases moderate amounts of ethylene. This project can be used on other fruits (like apple, pear etc.) also by loading their particular ethylene profiles.

RE: Project14 | Better World With Arduino: Build Projects that Make a Positive Impact on the World!

Recently, I developed an AI-driven budget-friendly device with the Arduino MKR GSM 1400 to collect water quality data from various water resources in the field over GPRS to train a neural network model (TinyML) and forecast water pollution levels based on oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), and turbidity measurements.

The device also transmits the prediction (detection) result via SMS.

I thought it would be an interesting entry to this contest. So, I published a blog post about it:

/challenges-projects/project14/betterworld/b/blog/posts/gsm-sms-enabled-ai-driven-tinyml-water-pollution-monitor

RE: Project14 | Better World With Arduino: Build Projects that Make a Positive Impact on the World!

I would like to carry out a project for the control of air quality in school classrooms or, in general, in a closed work environment. The Nicla Sense ME board Arduino seems to me the ideal choice as it does not require many other additional components and has a large number of sensors that can be used for an analysis of air quality, from the feeling of well-being (temperature and humidity) to presence of CO2.

RE: Project14 | Better World With Arduino: Build Projects that Make a Positive Impact on the World!

For this Project14, the project I propose on doing is a vegetable and goods quality detection device that you can add to your wet goods compartment or refrigerator. Usually the main reason for good spoiling is due to the difficulty of tracking what goods are going to spoil soon which is caused by having too much to do at home such as chores or work and inconsistency of tracking which food was bought and placed into storage especially if you have more people in your home constantly taking and returning food in and out your cabinets and fridge.

If given the opportunity, I’d like to develop this device using the Nicla Sense ME board which has a BME688 to detect rotting food odor and the BHI260AP to check if doors are opened. It’s BLE capabilities will allow to connect to a mobile app that can quickly record what you bought and their expiration date and create alerts when date gets closer and if rotting occurs and number of times compartments were opened on a given time.

Why I think this device can make a better world is because this can serve as an example that can inspire people to do more with lessening food loss to spoilage. With a rising global population and limited resources, I hope that my project can create awareness on optimizing food management from farm to table rather than to trash. Thank you

RE: Project14 | Better World With Arduino: Build Projects that Make a Positive Impact on the World!

This winter my area has been hit by a terrible drought: we had no rainfalls for more than 100 days. Even if -till now- there has not been outages of running water, I realized how precious water is and, for this reason, I would like to create something that can build awareness about water use and abuse. I was thinking of a small device based on Nicla Sense ME to install on the top of the tap lever. By measuring the tilt of the tap lever, the device will make a rough estimation of water flow (in liters per minute). Additionally, thanks to the 3-axis magnetometer, it will also be possible to determine the horizontal orientation of the tap lever and make an estimation of the amount of fossil fuels required to heat the water and, consequently, the amount of CO2 released. With proper calibration, the same device could be installed in a shower, where the tap is installed vertically on the wall

This is a simple sketch of the my idea

Peoples are not aware of the environment and their activity is the main reason behind our top position. To improve the situation public awareness is required. If we can monitor the air quality data in different locations and make them public people will realize the fact and they will be conscious of the environment and thus create a positive impact in the society. So using the Nicla Sense ME I want to make an IoT-based air quality monitoring device and make data public to create mass awareness.
https://consciousplanet.org/

Systemic Theory: Landfill gas is created by action of microorganisms within a landfill, that includes evaporation of volatile organic compounds, chemical reactions between waste components and microbial action. Mostly, emitted gas consists of methane, carbon dioxide, VOCs and VSCs.

Why Monitoring?

As per legislation, it is required that landfill gas is safely removed to avoid physical explosion due to build-up of CH4-pressure, leaching in ground water and soil poisoning.

Concept Deployment: Nicla Sense ME will be housed within an enclosed perforated vertical pipe, that will be (2/3rd) buried at sampling site. Sensor parameters from BME688 will be trained in BME-AI studio, and further sent to Arduino Cloud for creating health and environment awareness among the individuals.

RE: Project14 | Better World With Arduino: Build Projects that Make a Positive Impact on the World!

Does this initiative still have boards available for distribution?
