Hi ! I'm a bit disappointed to see the change in prizes for the project14 competition. While I understand the decision to switch to a kit, I think many past participants were looking forward to the shopping carts.

The shopping carts offered a great opportunity for winners to experiment with new components for their next projects, learn more about Farnell and Newark's product offerings and provide valuable feedback through reviews and suggestions about the products and the shopping experience.

I hope this change doesn't discourage future participation in the competition.

Project14 Permission Updates on Comments

To allow the new Community team members to catch up on Project14 content and member contributions, I've currently removed the permissions for members to comment on documents ( Documents ). There are a lot of comments to try to sift through on these, and that makes it difficult to see member's valid contributions to theme ideas!

I'm very excited to announce we will be setting up two new Project14 competitions with dates coming soon for a Halloween competition and then a Holidays competition to close out the year.

As part of setting up these new activities I would really like to hear as many opinions from as many people as possible.

What have been your favourite themes, prompts and final creations to date?

What would you love to see generally in future Project14 competitions?

Tariq, you have done a wonderful job with E14 Project14.

Its been a blast . I must admit my Project 14 fondness started to resemble a bit of an obsession.

There are still Road Tests and quizzes, design challenges, but Project 14 provided an outlet for true imagination.

I really enjoyed when the kiddies and pets joined in the projects, adding humanity into the technology.

Has the baton been passed and the E14 community look forward to engaging in more bi-monthly Projects ?................

Or has this Project14 ship sailed into the sunset awaiting to be reborn in a new engaging program format ?

The holiday's are now over and that means its time to pick the winners of our annual holiday special contest! The competition is now closed and we are looking for volunteers to choose a Grand Prize winner and award the First Place finishers. If you didn't get a chance to participate and this is a theme of interest to you then we could use your help in picking a winner! The Holiday Special showcased a diverse set of festive projects, each reflecting the unique creativity and technical skills of the participants. In this contest we introduced a new project format to the community and we're eager to hear your thoughts on it now the contest is over.

This contest had everything from ChatGPT Festivus AI-generated quotes to an interactive family game where you were fated to enjoy either Chocolate or Sprouts! There was an Interactive Tree Ornament featuring Space Invaders with microcontrollers and OLED displays, while "Happy Happy Happy Holiday" transformed RoadTest instruments into a visually creative holiday display. From LED Christmas trees using Charlieplexing to DIY electronic Christmas cards, there were a lot of fun projects we hope brought a smile to your face. Projects included a mesmerizing animated tree topper with lasers for feline entertainment and a TipsyTunes Festive Light Show featuring LEDs inside beer bottles playing Christmas tunes. The Spinning Christmas Ornament, using a Raspberry Pico W, RGB LED strip, and more, demonstrated a blend of mechanical design, electronics, and software for a visually appealing and dynamic holiday ornament.

There's so many good projects to choose from and we're asking your help in choosing the winners! If you volunteer to judge we'll ask you to pick your top overall project as well as your top 3 overall projects. The winners of this contest will receive multicomp product bundles along with shopping carts to buy whatever they want from our online stores! They will also get to decide shopping cart prizes for any members that produced deserving projects but did not win. Tis' the season for feeling good and making others feel good!

ChatGPT Festivus by Jan Cumps

Jan Cumps 's project involves a Festivus gizmo connected to ChatGPT, generating AI-generated Festivus quotes with a plain device design. Utilizing OpenAI's Chat API, Text To Speech API, and a Raspberry Pi, the gizmo allows users to press a button and hear intelligent festive thoughts spoken aloud.

Chocolate or Sprouts? by Fred27

This Christmas-themed quiz project by Fred27 features a game where two players answer questions using cards detected by a Lego color sensor connected to a Raspberry Pi and Lego BuildHat. Scores are kept secret until the end, and the winner receives chocolate while the loser has to make due with brussels sprouts, creating a festive and interactive family activity!

Interactive Tree Ornament - Space Invaders on a tree by dougw

This project from dougw involves creating an interactive Space Invaders-themed Christmas tree ornament with a microcontroller, OLED display, and sound effects. The build includes designing a compact PCB, stacking modules, and addressing assembly difficulties, resulting in a popular and addictive device for festive fun.

Happy Happy Happy Holiday by dougw

The project involves creating a holiday-themed blog using road test instruments, specifically two arbitrary waveform generators (Multicomp MP750511 and Digilent Analog Discovery 3) and a four-channel oscilloscope (Rhode & Schwarz RTB2004). The goal is to display a festive message on the oscilloscope screen using different channels for color variation, resulting in a visually creative and enjoyable holiday display.

Christmas tree 2023 by mihaita802003 :

This project from mihaita802003 involves creating a Christmas tree using a PIC12F675 microcontroller and 20 LEDs in Charliplexing mode. The code is written in MPASM, programmed using PicKit1, and powered by 3 AAA batteries. The PCB was designed using EasyEDA and soldered components following a specific layout, resulting in a festive LED Christmas tree.

Christmas Card with Lights and Sound by misaz

This DIY Christmas wish card project from misaz involves creating a paper card with LEDs, light bulbs, and a speaker, enhanced by a flexible hand-soldered circuit without a PCB. Controlled by an AVR32DD microcontroller, the card plays audio from external flash memory, features hardware-accelerated PWM for LED control, and is powered by CR2032 batteries for an interactive and festive experience.

Snow time like Christmas! by huwjones

This Christmas countdown decoration from huwjones is a family-built project featuring a snowman design controlled by an Arduino Nano board. Utilizing giant white 7 segment displays, the countdown allows for numeric or alphanumeric displays with user-settable dates, delighting grandchildren and visitors alike.

Christmas Music Panic Button by ntewinkel :

This holiday project from ntewinkel involves creating a "Christmas Music Panic Button" for users of voice assistants, specifically designed to skip unwanted songs in a more inconspicuous manner. Kitty Teasing, Angelic, Animated Beacon Tree Topper by robogary

Christmas Card Project Boxes by ntewinkel

This holiday project by ntewinkel creatively repurposes Christmas cards into small electronic project boxes. The card stock's festive design becomes the lid, while the inside greeting forms the box's bottom. With simple steps involving cutting, folding, and taping, these DIY boxes are perfect for housing small tech projects.

Cute Hexapod by satss

A holiday hexapod robot project by satss was undertaken, focusing on smooth leg movements and balance using 18 servos and an STM32 Blackpill microcontroller. The design includes 3D modeling, PCB creation, inverse kinematics equations, and plans for implementing body kinematics and sensors in the next phase.

LED Christmas Tree Charlieplexing 206 LEDs by taifur

This project by taifur involves creating an impressive LED Christmas Tree using Charlieplexing with 206 LEDs and an Arduino Nano. The circuit is straightforward, with 15 Arduino Nano pins used to drive the LEDs without the need for driver ICs, transistors, or resistors. The LEDs are organized into 12 layers, laser-cut from a 2mm acrylic sheet, and stacked with hex spacers. The brightness of LEDs can be adjusted programmatically or with a potentiometer, and a switch control option. The layers are connected with male-to-female hex spacers, forming a visually appealing Christmas tree.

TipsyTunes Festive Light Show by MarioPJ98

Sci Fi Movie Props, Space, Animals, or Home Decoration Projects?

We will be having a special theme around the Arduino Uno R4 when they become more available in our stores probably sometime in September.

For placing in the winners category in "Crazy Arduino Automations" and "Off the grid" Project14 competitions I ordered and received parts to build another "Off the Grid" project.

Shout out to misaz for publishing the spoils of his winnings, it inspired me to also share what can be done with shopping cart winnings !

Similar to rsc solar charged green "VHF go kit" Ham Radio Off-the-Grid "Go Box" and Solar Charging System

I always wanted to go one step further for go kits, to have an entire operational HF station & PC at home, just ready to go in a minute.

To accomplish that task, I was able to order a Multicomp flight case with shelves, a 375W DC inverter, 12Vdc and 120VAC fans, and a 10A solar converter regulator on shopping carts.

Thanks so much for the contests and the rugged materials.

The 12V battery, solar panel, and HF antenna will be external to the "go kit" case

but all these other components will be inside the case, ready to go and hit the road. (I hope)

I'll post progress on the physical layout as it develops.

The Kenwood TS 480 is a mobile station that natively runs on 12V, but in the event to grab the go kit and run, I didnt want to mess with a bunch of rewiring.

I also have both 115VAC and 12V monitors, but I'm thinking to maybe VNC into the LattePanda3 using a iPad to save hauling around a keyboard and mouse and speakers.

I tried using a mini keypad, its OK for Raspberry Pi with Kodi, but too cumbersome running a full function PC. Alot of fun to play with and experiment.

Music and timepieces are two things that are close to a lot of peoples hearts and we got some really great and creative projects around Music Time. The Music Time is now closed and we are looking for volunteers to choose a Grand Prize winner and award the First Place finishers. Music Time

You can build any projects involving clocks and musical instruments. The theme combines two things dear to the heart, music and timepieces. Your projects can involve building your own musical instruments such as theremins, guitar synths, e-bows, musical motion clocks, music themed clocks, musical instruments based on clocks, flute playing instruments and clocks, and more.

You will be judged on the basis of the following criteria:

Follow the Steps - Did they provide the steps it took to complete the project (text, video, or images) and/or schematics.
Submit Video Proof - Did they post a video proof of their project?
Stick to the Theme - How well did the project stick to the theme of the competition?

March 25th is Arduino Day 2023! What Should We Do for Our Annual Arduino Project Competition?

Arduino Day is March 25th, 2023.

Every year we do a contest around Arduino Day. Examples of Contests that we have done in the past include Open Arduino, IoT in the Cloud, NanoRama, Attack of the Drones, and Better World with Arduino.

We're planning a webinar with Arduino shortly before Arduino Day and the folks from Arduino recently contacted us to let us know of an event they will be participating in Chicago where half our team is located. To prepare for the festivities its time to start thinking about what type of Arduino Day project contest we want to launch. This is something we do every year and the project contests are usually inspired by feedback from our community members. Once we get some ideas together we may even create a poll to see what you want to do.

Greeting Best Community Members in the Galaxy!

As you probably are aware of we will be migrating to a new platform shortly. I'm just going to update you on a few things related to Project14 as we prepare to move to our new home.

Spy Nerd Competition - Deadline Extended to 12/17

A round up is posted on the new site and deadline for project submission has been extended to the 17th of November. When we move over we will need volunteers to judge the Spy Nerd projects. Comment below if you did not participate and would like to volunteer to judge projects.

Holiday Special 21' Update:

The theme for the Holiday Special competition this year is Build a Present. We had planned on launching this sooner but with the migration occurring its been delayed. I hope to have this ready in some form by middle of the week so as soon as the new site launches you can start sharing your project ideas or posting projects. I also have a bunch of arduinos in the office and I'm going to be throwing in some Pis as well for project suggestions that use them. Want to get as many projects in before Christmas in order to make the community look festive so we're launching early. Also this gives us time to send some boards for project ideas that look really cool!

What's Up with Project14:

As jive approaches end of life I can appreciate that things might look like a hot mess now. Attention is being paid on the new site and once you see it, I think you're going to like it.

Here's a sneak peak:

Right now I am tidying up the spaces so I can make some of these past competitions more visible. Also, playing around with features that will be available soon.

Our next regular competition (following the Holiday Special) will be Circuit Prototyping Techniques which is based on a suggestion from Jan Cumps. There is also the Auto Hacks competition which will be overlapping slightly. We haven't gotten any projects but I know that balearicdynamics was going to be posting some of his work from home van project to encourage more participation before it closes. You can see what this project looks like here:

balearicdynamics showed us what this looked like in PYNQ-Z2 Workshop: Session 3: FPGA Design Examples in Practice which he presented in along with Jan Cumps .

Other things we will be looking at is getting ideas for upcoming themes. In the past we did this with poll comments but I will be looking at some features they have on the new platform that look perfect for ideation for upcoming themes. I'm excited about what's ahead for Project14 and I think the new platform will be good for the program.

Once again it's time to pick the winners of the last project competition, the Off the Shelf competition. By volunteering to judge you help ensure that the winners of Off the Shelf reflect the diversity of thought and opinion that makes this the best online community for engineers in the galaxy!

Those of you that have volunteered to judge in the past, you know the drill. Comment below to let me know or message me directly at tariq.ahmad.

You're under no obligation to vote for the best project but we do ask that you look for complete projects and let us know your thoughts on the winners you pick.

The guidelines are loosely structured but are designed to encourage complete project submissions (with steps and video proof), and we want this program to be something that everyone in the community can participate to post smaller projects that fit within a theme (a theme the members pick in a monthly poll) .

For each project submission did the entrant do the following:

Follow the Steps - Did they provide the steps it took to complete the project (text, video, or images) and/or schematics.
Submit Video Proof - Did they post a video proof of their project?
Stick to the Theme - How well did the project stick to the theme of the competition?
Demonstrate Originality - Did they come up with a clever name for their project? Or did they introduce something new or that is not commercially available?

Submitting an entry?

Apart from following the rules and guidelines for a submission, is there anything special that has to be done? I created a blog entry by clicking on “submit an entry” from the theme page, but it’s not clear if it’s in or not. Other entries seem to have a project14 banner with ‘submit an entry’ links and my post is bereft of such decoration. I’d hate to miss the deadline by failing to do something!
