Hack the Holidays Competition

This year's holiday contest will be a year end hack-a-thon where you'll get a chance to win great prizes for great projects.  We're looking for festive projects that capture the awe and wonder of the holiday season so we're raising the stakes with some of the coolest prizes we've ever had.    You can win a 50 inch Picture Frame TV for for building projects that dazzle and awe us in the Work of Art project category,  if your project is the life of the party you could win giant floor speakers and a premium bluetooth record player in the Most Festive project category,  and finally you are encouraged to stretch the limits of your creativity and do something completely original for a chance to win the latest and greatest iPad Pro in the most Original Hack project category!

In the forum let Us know What Holiday Projects You'll Be Working On!

This is the sixth year in a row we have hosted a holiday project competition.  Like years prior you can use Music, LED Displays, Nixie Pixels, Strobe Lights, a Fog Machine, or Anything Else that Puts You into a Celebratory Mood for your holiday projects!   You could do a project inspired by gifts, food, or cards exchanged during the holidays.  Or you could focus on electronic ways of sending the warmest wishes to friends and family, such as an electronic greetings card, a way to automatically email or use RF transmission to link up via video etc.  It can also be a fun project that's made in the holiday spirit such as a snow globe that will warn you of inclement weather conditions, voice-activated ornaments, jazzed up holiday cards, LED decorations - anything that means the holidays to you.  Your project can be related to Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Festivus for the rest of us related!  It can even be a Star Wars project, if you only believe in the Force.

Your project will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Follow the Steps- Did you show the steps it took you to complete the project (text, video, or images) and did you include documentation such as schematics?
  • Submit Video Proof- Did you post video proof of you project?
  • Stick to the Theme- How well did your project stick to the theme (any holiday project) of the competition?
  • Demonstrate Originality- Was your project your original?  Did you come up with a clever name for their project?

Event Date
Competition Opens: 18th November 2022

Your Chance to Win

Come Up With a Clever Name
Stick to the Theme
  • A clever name can make your project memorable.
  • The right name can distinguish your project from others and help create buzz around your project.
  • This project is your baby! Part of the fun of bringing something new into the world is coming up with a name.
  • If you have an idea for a project that doesn't fit the current theme then submit your idea in the comments section of the monthly poll.
Be Original
Submit Video Proof
  • Providing the steps you took to complete your project (text, video, or images) and providing video proof should be sufficient in most cases.
  • If your project introduces something new or something that is not commercially available or affordable then that counts!
  • If it doesn't work that's fine, this program is more about the journey than the end product.
  • A short video is all that is required but you can shoot as much video as you like.
  • You are encouraged to be creative and have as much fun as possible!

A turntable !!!!! Wow, how retro ! I still have some vinyl around someplace, unless "somebody" got rid of it, but no working player. This has just reminded me, maybe I should see if I can refurbish our…

I found a circuit in an electronic magazine from my country, which is older than me, and it had a section entitled "Constructions for the holidays!" , with reference to electronic circuits. it is probably…

Alright, got three ideas, one for each theme. For most original I was thinking an AI camera robot thing that uses emotion recognition to see if you are naughty or nice.

For the most festive I was thinking christmas lights you never take down, as they are made of RGB lights and can change color depending on the season.

For most artistic I would make a DIY christmas countdown clock that updates via wifi, and says something about each day as it goes around.

    What do you all think?

Yes, it is quite an effective display when powered up.

Might also work quite well if scaled up a bit, especially if you are into outdoor displays.

Not so sure about a pin. A sticker or fridge magnet might help avoid any further injury.... Slight smile

I'd recommend you for an E14 Achievement sticker "Injured for E14" .

Wonder if Chris could have them made into a pin.
