The purpose of this project is to create an automated irrigation system based on an Arduino Uno and ESP-01. It will need to automatically detect when irrigation is required and if there is water in the reservoir so that irrigation

RE: Arduino and ESP-01 based irrigation system

you can try a trick I use with battery operated pic projects to shut the sensors before I put the PIC to sleep...

Tie the 5v line from the sensor board to an output pin. as long as the board draws less that the source current of the pin you're good.

Then you just bring that pin high before you take your reading then drop it low until the next time you need to take a reading.

For bigger sensors or a bunch of them tied together that draw a lot of current a p channel mosfet works great as a high side switch.

Works really well if you sleep several minutes between readings.

RE: Arduino and ESP-01 based irrigation system

That's a great project.....

That bucket reminds me of my CO2 Laser water supply bucket..

[View:/resized-image/__size/620x602/__key/commentfiles/f7d226abd59f475c9d224a79e3f0ec07-91874ebb-164b-4787-936e-e199ccd00fba/3058.contentimage_5F00_187164.jpg:620:602]

theres a temp probe, float switch, flow sensor there along with the pump and filter..

I 3D printed the odd ball pieces.

the flow sensor was cheap. might be good for your project to catch a plugged intake hose or stalled pump....

[View:/resized-image/__size/620x359/__key/commentfiles/f7d226abd59f475c9d224a79e3f0ec07-91874ebb-164b-4787-936e-e199ccd00fba/6281.contentimage_5F00_187165.jpg:620:359]

RE: Arduino and ESP-01 based irrigation system

Bad news: The soil hygrometer which i used in this project has stopped working. It still gives a signal which no longer changes (has been at 183 for the past 4 days), but it turns out that the metal layer on the prongs which is buried in the soil has corroded away. Good thing that i noticed the strange behavior and investigated further before my olive tree died! Very sad. I was aware of the danger of using this cheap sensor at an early stage, but - unfortunately - i cannot afford a better solution. Am very curious about the Vegetronix VH400, but it is expensive - especially after the shipping charges and customs fees to Norway. Anyway - i guess that puts an end of this project. I hoped to make a pcb board and enclosure eventually. The sketch should also be modified to log the watering intervals and the amount of water that was used - possibly with other relevant data (at least temperature and humidity).

-raymond

RE: Arduino and ESP-01 based irrigation system

Raymond,

Looks like another interesting watering project. Good Luck!

Gene

RE: Arduino and ESP-01 based irrigation system

Very nice design.

DAB
