As long as you learnt something, it wasn't wasted.

I would suggest doing some searching on the internet to find the "Arduino Cookbook"

Ver2 is around and if you hunt there is a pdf download around.

Many books talk about this command, and how to use it, while this book tackles various tasks and the commands available to resolve the task.

IMO it's much better for novices and those still trying to understand Arduino, or what they can do to make xyz happen.
