GreatScott! just posted a DIY or Buy video on YouTube with the MLX90640 where he compares it to a commercial FLIR camera. His opinion? He didn’t really find the sensor suitable for his electronic use.

Hi Frank,

Really well-built project, it looks awesome!

Just to throw some ideas out, I think it may be good to one day swap out the microcontroller for the Pi Zero as you were intending, because it can open up a lot of options, like faster update rate (with the downside of more noise), and also 'bilinear interpolation' (that's possible on microcontrollers too, but I don't know how fast the board you're using is) which will give noticeably higher-res images without it being very apparent it's interpolated. Also with Linux it's possible to easily record folders of the images too : ) maybe even convert to .MP4.

But that would be a very different project, whereas your the current design is immediately more practical has the benefits of lower power and quicker to get going, and it's still fairly high-res considering a lot of other sensors are 8x8 pixels or so.

The Melexis sensors are nice, I had not realized they had these high-res ones now, the price seems reasonable too.

The child in me always wanted a thermal camera, but then, the adult in me always asking - why ? what for ?

Very nice build. Great use of colors.

I’ve always wanted to try a thermal camera. The version with the 110 degree FOV would be nice to augment another camera application that I’m working on.
