I've long had an idea for a super basic color sensor. I'm not talking about the fancy-schmancy color sensors like this one , but rather something more basic... much much more basic...
The concept here is to use a humble RGB LED and a phot

RE: WWCS - World's Worst Color Sensor - Project 14 Photonics Challenge

James,

A very interesting project. You seem to have covered all the necessary areas. Colour measurement is a very tricky area as it can be quite subjective and many electronic camera devices detect/show quite different colours to what you think they should do. I was once slightly involved with making a similar sensor to measure how white paper was. I just thought white was white but apparently there is an almost infinite variation in whiteness so if you want to produce a product with a consistent whiteness you need a quite specific type of sensor.and light measuring system. It looked quite similar to what you have produced. Good work.

Dubbie

RE: WWCS - World's Worst Color Sensor - Project 14 Photonics Challenge

Very cool project. Playing with lights and colors is always fun.

RE: WWCS - World's Worst Color Sensor - Project 14 Photonics Challenge

Awesome project. It's always a nice feeling when you can apply theory and it works.

With regards to the problem of detecting the white, I was wondering out aloud whether adding an additional white led would work in this case. May need some calibration. My thinking is that the white would reflect the most back when using the white led and any colour object should reflect less. This defines the white versus non white case and then you do the colour/color swatch test.
