Great blog, thanks. I’m a great one for wanting the right tool for the job, even if it means rare use, and a lot of raised eyebrows and tutting from the wife. Good quality as well: there is nothing worse than ‘fighting’ a tool.

That almost final view of your lid is very nice. I like the background texture (surrounding 'project14'). Very nice work there.

Update:

The whole 'fibre optic light guide' was properly crappy!!

A big bundle of those plastic optical fibres miget look bright, but 6 of them thru a 2mm hole? Not so much!

Solution? Dig thru that bag of random LEDs I got in my £35 components bundle from eBay (a proper bargain IMHO) - dig out one with a Vf the same as the drive voltage being supplied to the fitted LED (eBay component tester gives Vf rather handily), change the 2mm round hole in the lid to a rectangular slot (for the red rectangular LED), glue the LED in place, solder a pair of fly leads to the PSU and plug the LED into the fitted 2 pin plug!

Sorted.

PSU base now reprinted with PCB retainer at one end, remodelled DC jack outlets (I got another, shorter DC plug), test fit the two halves - 'click' - yup, they lock together perfectly.

Time to wire up the PSU to the switches & 3 outlets tomorrow!

Once it's done, fitted and working, I'll be sure to let you all know.

Nice project, I really enjoy reading ones that put items people have to alternative uses. Thanks for posting this far, I am sure you will get to finalise the elements at some point in time, a bit of procrastination never hurt anybody.

Nice project, particularly like how the 3D components tie it all together.

I've also recently spotted that car suppliers are a good way to get 12v to 5v DC-DC converters. I've not checked the ripple on mine yet but as it's been fed into further regulators I'm not too concerned.

I had similar thoughts about Ben's Dev Kit for microcontrollers which don't have video output.

I was pondering doing something similar but using the likes of a Pi-Top as the starting chassis and fitting the Arduino + breadboard onto its modular rail system to make it a portable dev solution.

Not as much storage space as your briefcase so that would likely have to end up in a separate case.

Nice build there. Most projects never really seem to reach the fully finished stage, so you are not that far behind. Just poke, probe, re-work and no time, it will be everything you wanted it to be.

Sometimes it's all about the journey and whether you get there is far less interesting... :-)

Also, I'm glad there was another lunch box dev kit..

Was hoping to see someone do one and this made my day!
